Colt Python: what year did grips transition?

Hello folks,

Trying to find out some info for a friend with a 70s Python. He doesn't know the history of the gun and we're not sure if the grips on his gun are correct for the year. He got it many years ago and it is a safe queen. I read that the transition between type 2 to type 3/later model grips was the mid 70s. Anyone know which year, serial number range?
