WALTHER P99

So a buddy of mine has a Walther p99 in .40 and its an older model pre Smith&Wesson. I have done alot of looking and reading but wanted to ask around here.
This p99 looks brand new and has only had 10 rounds down the barrel. He said he will let me have it for 500 is it worth it? Are they good shooters, reliable.
Another thing im trying to find out is do they have any known problems, failures or drawbacks.

Only thing I didn't like about my P990 (DAO .40) was the long trigger pull. Not sure which trigger he has on his p99. Mine was extremely reliable and accurate enough. If he has the mags with blue followers, you may get them changed for the orange ones. Don't remember why they were better.
For me, it was a very comfortable gun in the hand. Taking it apart was really easy. I put a stainless guiderod on mine and cut a couple of coils off the striker spring to lighten the pull. Still never failed to fire.
In my opinion 450 to 500 is reasonable, I've seen people ask for more, but don't know if they actually sell for that. Getting a rail adapter for the older P99 frames is difficult, so putting a light on it may not be so easy. The newer frames had a more standard style rail. Smith and Wesson customer service was much better that average when I the plastic guide rod developed a crack. Tennifer coating was very durable.
In short, I'd buy one again...

For a practically new gun, it's not a bad price at all. They MSRP for about 650ish?

You can pick up a new sf XD or G17 for 499 if you look around. These two give you better acc options and are much more accurate . The list goes on

I ended up buying a 1911 instead, but the P99 was my number one choice when I began looking. I had a chance to shoot several pistols extensively including the P99. My complaint was the same as georound1's, I was not fond of the trigger pull. The gun was super comfortable to shoot, relatively accurate, I just did not like the trigger pull. Shoot one to see if YOU like it, and see if you can have a trigger job done on one.

It is an excellent pistol, but it has sh***y marketing and product support from its importer (S&W) . Also, parts and accessories can be a little hard to find. If found, it can be pricy. I rate it as a better overall pistol than Glock and XD IMO.

Of all my 9mms, the P99 has the snappiest recoil of them all. Who cares right? It's a 9mm. The small, compact package makes the recoil characteristic a little harsher than others, still manageable. I don't really like the long slack in mine. I keep it for novelty reasons *cue James Bond music*

The P99's come with 3 trigger styles:

1. AS (single action/double action) trigger style,
2. QA (glock like short reset double action trigger)
3. DOA- a long, hard double action only trigger.

The most desirable trigger system is the AS trigger.

If you already own and have Glocks then the QA is the one to get.

The double action only version is not desirable. These are hard to unload for a reasonable price.

Used P99's go for 450-550 in AS trigger.
Used P99's in QA trigger run about 450-500.
I would not get the DOA version even if it was only 250.

Notably the 1st generation, pre-S&W P99's have a proprietary closed dust guard rail that no accessories will fit, unless they are P99 licensed products.

I have three P99's and a SW99 these are good polymer guns. Shoot it before you buy it though. I prefer the P99 over the M&P, XD and Glocks.

One thing to add as well. Glocks are known for their short reset. Dare I say my 1st gen P99 (DA/SA) has a perceived shorter reset than my Glocks?

I loved the superior ergonomics and reliability (YES! ) on my Walther P22 so I decided to spring for a P99 too. I got the P99QA 9mm in Green.....it matches my rifle now Only 50 flawless rounds on the P99, but so far it's great. Oh and like Black Magic, I like the James Bond part of the equation too. They are going for $650 & up brand new now.

I bought one for 400. I like it.

i shot one in .40 a few years ago and the muzzle flip on it was much more pronounced than any other 40 i have shot(hk glock sig). that is why i never ended up getting one. but other than that it seemed like a great gun.

I have on in 9mm, and love it. it's like a cap gun peww peww peww. you do have to get used to it, I have over 5k down the pipe. the long trigger pull is only on the first round, after that, you only have to relax your finger 1/4 inch or so for the next round, once you figure that out you can dump a mag fasssst, mine is very accurate and easy to handle. for the most part I do not like polymer guns, they feel clumsy to me (1911 guy ) but the P99 is a very natural pointer

I handled one once and was disappointed with the ergonomics. may fit you better tho.

They suck, get a Glock.
