Taking firearm out of CA

Hi all,

I want to take one of my guns out of the CA to oversea. I tried contacting Department of Justice multiple times but I haven't heard back from them. What's the procedure on relocating the firearm out of CA? Do I have to go through ATF as well?

The GCA does not require export licenses. However, most firearms and ammunition must be exported in accordance with the provisions of the Arms Export Control Act of 1976. Regulations implementing this Act generally require a license to be obtained from the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls, Department of State, PM/DDTC, SA-1, Room 1200, 2401 E St., N.W., Washington, DC 20037; (202) 663-1282.

The export of sporting shotguns and ammunition for sporting shotguns is regulated by the U.S. Department of Commerce rather than the State Department. An export license is generally needed to export these shotguns and ammunition. For further information, contact them at their nearest district office or the Bureau of Industry and Security, Outreach and Educational Services Division, U.S. Department of Commerce, 14th St. & Pennsylvania Ave. N.W., Washington, DC 20230, (202) 482-4811.

When exporting NFA firearms, ATF Form 9 must be completed and approved by ATF prior to export.

I Know that people do take firearms to places like Africa for hunts, and bring them back, so it is possible.

You also have to worry about the laws at your destination, and any county you might pass through on the way. handguns can be especially difficult.

A friend of mine went to New Zealand for a Red Stag hunt. He told me the outfitter took care of everything. He did need paperwork from the ATF, New Zealands gov, and the airline to make sure everything was legal.
Like Ron Solo said, you gotta check the laws of cities and counties you maybe crossing through.
I don't know if it's B.S. or not but i've heard of people getting busted in New Jersey and New York. They are more restrictive than California when it comes to handguns.

It's not BS. NY/NJ have busted people in spite of FOPA '86. NRA Civil Rights fund is backing the defense of a couple of the "cleanest-case" folks, IIRC.

I'm looking to ship it directly to my home oversea. Everything is legit there and I have all the paperwork to own handgun. I'll try to contact ATF and see what they need. Anyone with experience feel free to chime in.
