    Question: 45acp vs. 45GAP

My friend has a kimber which shoots 45acp. He tells me he has shot 45GAP out of the same weapon.

    Should he have concerns?

Technically you can shoot it but i wouldn't. The round is going to be jumping an awfully long way. Because the 45 is such a low pressure round I wouldn't be to worried about it but i'd recommend he never do it again. Besides, 45GAP costs more than 45ACP.

I'm no expert, but I wouldn't shoot .45GAP out of a gun chambered in .45ACP for the simple reason that I believe .45GAP operates at a higher pressure than .45ACP, and is a shorter cartridge overall.

I was pretty sure 45GAP was a higher pressure load too, about on par with .45 ACP +P.

ok I was a little harsh

Why shoot GAP ammo? unless you have a stash of it and sold that POS glock like everyone else who bought into the GAP myth.

Stick to whatever caliber it says on the barrel.

I shoot .45GAP put of my .45ACP revolver.
The shorter OAL of the .45GAP, makes reloading faster.

.45GAP does operate at higher pressures than .45ACP.
.45GAP pressure is in the range of where .45ACP +P operates.
                I do not recommend shooting .45GAP out of a .45ACP pistol (non-revolver).

A friend of mine shot a 40 s&w out of a 45 acp 1911 by accident. I wouldn't shoot anything out of a auto that the gun isn't designed for.

This is NOT a safe practice. The 45ACP headspaces on the casemouth. Firing the shorter 45GAP in a 45ACP chamber, the cartridge has nothing to headspace on. This is a big NO, NO.

If you keep doing this and a case ruptures or something happens, you're going to prove the "dumb gun owner myth" is no myth.

I took a handgun training class at a local range. On the firing line, when my turn came up, I picked up the empty magazine and began loading it. It's a good thing I already knew to read the stamp on each round of ammunition because some staff guy put a 9mm round in the box of .45ACP. I stopped. Told the guy, and he didn't seem to care much. The reaction of his bothered me more than finding the wrong ammunition in the staff-provided box of ammunition. What if someone else were up in line and loaded that damn thing into the magazine!

I never thought about it before. Since GAP is a higher pressure round, It sounds like a great choice for NFA .45acp carbines. I know that GI .45acp MG ammo is really HOT. Anyone have an opinion about this?

It would have popped the case and probably not ejected. Other than that, nothing :P

The gap round will index off of the extractor not the case mouth if used in a acp gun. Not a big deal at all. It won't be as accurate but it should work.

The reason the guy wasn't worried about shooting caliber smaller than the gun is designed for is because it won't hurt a thing. All you'd have done is learned how to clear a jam and that your concerns weren't anything to be concerned about.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.
