Ruger GP100 or S&W-686 ?

Have you compared both and which one do you prefer?

I plan to buy one or the other. I have not shot either yet.

I personally think the GP100 is a tougher looking gun, that's why I chose it.

Strong, accurate, and no internal lock BS to affect function or reliability.
Better price too.

If you can find a pre-lock 686, it's very hard to go wrong. Well built, well balanced and will always hold value.

If you can't then go with the Ruger. Not saying the Ruger is inferior at all. It's rugged and reliable.

The S&W is just better, to me.

i've heard nothing but good things about the gp100, don't know too much about the 686.

My uncle got a GP100 and and I shoot a lot from it. Using a RCBS trigger gauge, its trigger measures 4.5lbs. The gun is built like a tank, very accurate, will last forever.
If you got more money, go to a 686+ (7 rounds) like mine, 4 " barrel, trigger SA is only 3.5 lbs. Super accurate, it outshoot my Les Baer TRS from a benchrest, for semiautomatic, all the money and works is to reduce the plays between barrel and slide, between slide and frame. For revolvers, barrrel never move

Both will do well, but I prefer the refined 686 over the rugged GP100

Both are great. If money is an issue go for the Ruger it's cheaper.

I voted GP100, but in truth, they are both very fine weapons, and either will serve you very well.

avoid the internal lock bs and get the Ruger.

If you want to be extra safe put a trigger lock on when not in use. I see no place for a lock on a gun.

I have both a GP100 and a pre-lock 686+ and you couldn't go wrong with either one. The GP100 is definitely built like a tank and will last you forever. The 686+ gives you 1 additional shot. I'm really not too fond of the newest S&W with the intergral lock.

The 6" SS GP100 was on sale at Southern CA Gun in Kearny Mesa last time I was there, $495. Can't beat that even online! About $200 more for the S&W...

I have a Gp-100 and I've shot the 686. Both will serve you well. The Ruger is built very solid and is a good value. The S&W has a MUCH better trigger though, arguably looks better, has a nicer finish, and will have a higher resale value. It really depends on what is more important to you.

Can't go wrong with either, but the Smith has a great trigger right out of the box and will hold it's value better. An older 686+ would be my first choise.
