    Difference between Glock generations

I'm seriously thinking about getting a glock 21 and possibly a 19 (cheaper ammo) and am looking at getting a used gun. I see lots of talk about the different generations of the glock and I can't seem to find anything explaining this. What is the difference between the generations? What should I look for in getting a used glock? Are there particular generations to steer away from? Would I be better off just getting a brand new model? Any help is appreciated.

The second generation and on are all good.
The only difference was the checkering on the frame and finger grooves and newer generation have light rail. Generation 4 has the best texture. RTF Rough texture frame.

Technically not Gen 4, it's just a RTF of the 3rd gen.

There is thread on the 4th Gen Glock coming out in 2010, supposed to have a standard rail and replaceable grip straps, and some redesigns.

Up in the air if it will pass the roster at this point.
I think it can be confirmed that an alien xenomorph is absolutely no match for good ole' Alabama black snake!

          and

If you're in a survival movie and the hot blond twists her ankle and can't walk, you damn well figure a way to carry her. If it's a dude, you shake his hand and say "best of luck".

I don't think so. I'm sure even glocks wear out eventually but I wouldn't have a problem buying a used glock (or any of the other well-reputed polymer-framed pistols available).

Get a gen 3 with or w/o the RTF. Also, they are so cheap, and hold their value so well you may very well just buy a new one. My Glock 20 was $600 out the door ordered from Glock. My Glock 19 was under $600 out the door as well.
