I'm the proud recent new parent of an XD 40 Tactical. Due to the timing of my purchase, I found myself trying to buy ammo in the current climate of gun and ammo shortages. And I found myself in a state that just effectively made it impossible to mail order ammo as of 2011.
While it isn't currently impossible to find ammo, it hasn't been particularly convenient, so I've found myself stocking up so that I don't have to worry about ammo when spending a day with friends or family at the outdoor range.
When I see that an economical brand of range ammo is actually available online, I have been buying 10-30 boxes at a time, and have now finally amassed enough where I'm comfortable that I'll have plenty of time to reorder and replenish without using up my supply.
So I'm wondering, for those of you that shoot on a semi-regular or regular basis (at least once every two months maybe?), how much ammo do you keep on hand for a given caliber?
If you have multiple calibers, what is the most you have on hand for a single caliber, or how much do you keep around for your most frequently used caliber?
Obviously I can take my consumption rate and estimate how much I should stock at any given time, but I'm just curious to understand how much others store (or stockpile / hoard) so that they don't worry about having adequate ammo.
I'm primarily thinking about range ammo, as I assume that most people (non-LEO / military) don't need large quantities of tactical / self defense ammo.

Oh, and I doubt I can carry much more than 400 rounds on me anyway. Would be hard to keep the zombies at bay while trying to pull a dolly full of extra ammo!
