How much ammo do you keep on hand?

I'm the proud recent new parent of an XD 40 Tactical. Due to the timing of my purchase, I found myself trying to buy ammo in the current climate of gun and ammo shortages. And I found myself in a state that just effectively made it impossible to mail order ammo as of 2011.

While it isn't currently impossible to find ammo, it hasn't been particularly convenient, so I've found myself stocking up so that I don't have to worry about ammo when spending a day with friends or family at the outdoor range.

When I see that an economical brand of range ammo is actually available online, I have been buying 10-30 boxes at a time, and have now finally amassed enough where I'm comfortable that I'll have plenty of time to reorder and replenish without using up my supply.

So I'm wondering, for those of you that shoot on a semi-regular or regular basis (at least once every two months maybe?), how much ammo do you keep on hand for a given caliber?

If you have multiple calibers, what is the most you have on hand for a single caliber, or how much do you keep around for your most frequently used caliber?

Obviously I can take my consumption rate and estimate how much I should stock at any given time, but I'm just curious to understand how much others store (or stockpile / hoard) so that they don't worry about having adequate ammo.

I'm primarily thinking about range ammo, as I assume that most people (non-LEO / military) don't need large quantities of tactical / self defense ammo.

I keep adding to it constantly but as of right now I've got about 2k of .223 and around 1k of .40

It depends on the caliber for me.

I own several different rifle calibers and three handgun calibers. Since I don't shoot my handguns very often, I try to keep 100 rounds of 45 ACP, 44 Mag, and 45 LC around. The same thing for rifle calibers I don't shoot very often such as 30-40 Krag and 30-30. But I try to keep enough reloading components to make 1000 rounds of 5.56 and 30-06 since those are the two I shoot the most often. But I only load them in batches of 100.

1> simplify your collection. You don't want to have too many different calibers to keep track of, and stocking. 1 for pistol, 1 for rifle. You can have other caliber for fun/ specific purpose guns, just don't stock up on those unless you have money to burn.

2> do not panic buy right now. It's hard to find ammo. I understand it's hard not to keep shooting a new gun. The excitement wears off, and you won't shoot as much. Buy ammo CHEAP when you can find it, and build your stash slowly till you're comfortable. Remember, you have 16 months till AB962 is in effect. Ammo shortage would be much much better by then.

3> You can always go to Vegas on vacation and stock up at the same time with cheap range ammo.

                  I currently have:

                  8k .22LR
                  5k 9mm
                  7k .223/5.56
                  400 12ga in various buck/bird/slugs

Seems like a lot, but I hit the range about every 2 weeks.

If I ever have more than 500 rounds in a single cartridge type, I seem to start wasting it. Something psychological I guess about having so much. Keeping about 300-400 rounds of each type seems adequate to me.

Plus in a wost case scenario zombie apocalypse, I can always switch guns when I run out of one kind of ammo Oh, and I doubt I can carry much more than 400 rounds on me anyway. Would be hard to keep the zombies at bay while trying to pull a dolly full of extra ammo!
