wanting to get a 1911...

Im considering getting rid of my glock to get a springfield 1911 now before ya guys say never get rid of one gun to get another I don't have another option I can only afford to have one pistol in one caliber. I have a glock 17 now I love glocks but I shot a buddies springfield G.I. and I really liked it and I was quite a bit more accurate with it, I like the .45 round better and I plan on doing some upgrades to it. My main concerns and questions are are these guns defense worthy? Reliable? I reload so ammo cost is not as much of a concern.

i'm a noob to 1911s and from what i read they all need breaking in and you gotta keep them clean and oiled.should be good to go.

i definitely can shoot better with my kimber 45 than when i had my hk p2000 and sig 225. i think it's due to the nice single action.

i'm getting rid of my kimber to upgrade to a fully custom 1911. now i see why 1911 guys are hooked.

I would have to say they are reliable guns if they are built well, good mags are used, and the right ammo is used. Everything I've ever read about them points at those basic things. I'm not an expert but they are great guns. I'm also thinking about picking one up in the near future.

Eh if I had the money I would be getting something custom but I don't, Im just wondering after upgrading it or even stock are these good quality guns? or do you need to spend over a grand to get a even a 1911 that is considered quality? I mean I shot my buddies and liked it but this will be the pistol that goes with me to tactical classes and bedside pistol...

How much are you looking to spend? Springfield GI 45 is a great gun to own. Personally if I was looking to get a 1911 for tactical use I probably would go with a 4inch.

I can cloverleaf at 15 feet with my GI, it's plenty accurate, just that the front sight is hard to see indoors, which is why I recommend the milspec for a first economy 1911

My 1911 runs essentially flawless, any FTEs I've experienced was ammo related. Out of the box, just make sure to lube the rails & hand cycle the action a few hundred times & you can pretty much be set. After approx 6K rounds through her, she eats pretty much anything I give her, including JHPs. Lately, I've been using reloads (bought at the range due to ammo shortage/costs) and have only had one FTE- 'cause of ammo. I'm shooting 5-6 inch groups at 25 yards.

Also purchased a .22 conversion kit for it, and results are the same, although the kit is much more of a picky eater. The ammo that works best has been high velocity ammo (specifically CCI Mini Mags).

You probably shot the 1911 better because it fit your hand well and even the worst SA trigger is better than a striker or DA.

All the major brand 1911's are good these days but are running over a K for fetures not found on Springfield Mill Spec models. If under a K is your budget you can't beat the Mill Spec. It will eat anything you put through it and shoot well to boot. I built my 38 super using the Mill Spec frame and slide and it's a keeper.

Of my batch of 1911's the Springfield TRP and Champion are probably my best off the shelf production pistols. My target Kimbers and compact Kimbers are good too in all the calibers owned.

My favorite of the crew is my Ed Brown S.O. over the Wilson Combat. But I wouldn't ditch the Wilson.

I never sell a pistol to buy another... but I understand and sympathize with the finance constraints. 28 yrs ago my life's collection went to paying a divorce attorney and swore that would never happen again. It's taken that long to catch up...

+1 on the Mil-Spec. I added the Pachmayr wraparound grip and extra mags and that's all I needed.

You still have that PSS w/ Leupolt M4 right? That should get you in the $1K+ range.

Id rather have my long range gun than two pistols as I only really have one true long range rig right now due to finance issues and I put well over 1k into that rifle so I would just take a major loss... it's a SPS-V in the M24 stock "I know M24 is LA but same stock in short action" had a bunch of stuff on it worked over by a smith and badger and MK4 hardware the scope alone cost me a grand, I only really need one pistol right now and I think the milspec might be the one. I'm just having a hard time justifying getting rid of a gun that runs no matter what but when it comes down to it I am just a way better shot with a 1911.

I agree with both of these guys, the Dan Wesson's are the best value on the planet in 1911's. Springer's are good, but you get a little extra value with a Dan Wesson.
