Glock 19 is an excellent gun to start with and it's my wife's favorite so yours may like one also. Good size and 9mm ammo is easier to find than most although all ammo is scarce right now. Welcome to CalGuns.

just because of the ammo situation, i say 9mm glock 19. if you wanna have fun, get a ruger 22/45 or a 1911WTB:

Welcome to the addiction! I've been spending way too much money on this hobby lately. This Glock 19 was my latest (but not last) addition to the family. Its a really great gun, very enjoyable to shoot and has been performing flawlessly thus far.

i voted 23. .40 is just as easy to control as 9 but offers a little more stopping power. and around my hood its easier to find .40 than 9 so it works out great for me.
but a .22lr pistol is a great place to start. plus unless the bg is doped up on pcp your gonna get the same result from shooting him with a .22 as a 9. its gonna hurt and the bg will at the least run away. nobody likes getting shot. no matter what its with.Natural selection has arrived!!!Comment

The Glock 17 or 19 are both great begineer pieces, and if you add a .22 conversion kit they're even better. The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.

Stopping power is a myth. All common handgun rounds perform the same on human targets.i voted 23. .40 is just as easy to control as 9 but offers a little more stopping power. and around my hood its easier to find .40 than 9 so it works out great for me.

For years the mob used .22's to perform assassinations, and cops all over have been taking people down with 9mm. The FBI has conducted tests showing there's relatively no difference.

My biggest problem was my wife not being able to rack the slide on my XD45. She doesn't like revolvers so she will be getting a P22. She was actually able to rack the slide on a p226 though. (but she has small hands and it wasn't really comfortable for her) If your wife can rack the slide, then you have already cleared the hurdle I had to go through when picking out a hand gun for the wifey. Like the others suggested, rent, rent, rent, and buy what you guys are most comfortable with.Comment

considering the fact that i feel like shooting close to everyday, i probably should consider at least a .22 conversion kit regardless of which gun i get. but i just wonder if i'll feel the same euphoric release after shooting a .22. shooting the .45's last night was so fun.
my obsession with shooting is part home defense and part stress relief. i try hard to aim for the bulk of the time and then for at least 2 clips at the end, i just try to hit the paper and blast away. its much better than drinking and in the end, its cheaper than a night at the bar too, even with .45 rounds.Comment

magazines, not clips..
9mm is cheap to shoot, and if you reload it's a trivial expense.
.22's are fine, but I wouldn't rely on training with a .22 over a full powered round.OCSD Approved CCW Instructor

You will probably end up getting a shot gun for home defense. Also take into consideration ammo availability. .45 has been scarce for a long time. If we are unsucessful in overturning ab962, availability on handgun ammo will suck even more.Comment

oops . . . didn't realize clip was not the proper word. i think i listened to too much rap music as a teen.Comment
