    FTF pistol transfer question

My friends father wants to give me his grandfathers Colt Police Positive revolver. Its a .32, not sure of the date of manufacture, but most likely 50 yrs plus, its in fairly decent shape. Question I had was do I need to do an FFL transer or can this be done FTF like a C&R? Also, could I contact Colt if need be to get a date of manufacture from them if need be?

Because it is a handgun, it doesn't matter that it is 50 or more years old, and a FFL01 has to get involved.

Pistol has to be done PPT(Face to Face) at an FFL, since it isn't on the roster. I'm sure Colt will provide a certificate of manufacture for a fee.

Pistols reach C&R status at 100yrs IIRC. You need to do a FFL transfer.

They reach C&R status at 50 years old. An antique firearm is one manufactured prior to 1899.

If it is a Colt Police Positive then it is over 50 years old. It is C&R and exempt from the California safe handgun roster. It can be shipped to a California FFL.

The date can be checked by serial number on this web site...

If it is a Colt Police Positive Special then there is a chance that it is not yet 50 years old. But I'm pretty sure they never made the Police Positive Special in .32 caliber.

The friend who wants to give it to me is here in CA, same area I live in, this will not be shipped to an FFL, just a PPT at an FFL. Why is it that pistols dont fall under the C&R exemptions for FTF transfers but long guns do?

because the lawmakers did not write the law that way.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?
