Springfield Armory 1911 9mm Range Report

So I took my new 1911 9mm down to Jackson Arms twice recently for some range work. I shot ~200 of WWB rounds each time, and in that total 400 rounds fired I experienced one failure to eject - otherwise operation of the gun is nominal.

The gun has fixed Novak sights, and at 25 yards I had a couple of 5" 5-shot groups (shooting from a weaver stance). Accuracy at closer distances was predictably better.

The only wierd thing I experienced during both trips is that occasionally (maybe 4 or 5 times), usually the 3rd round out of the magazine, the gun ejected the casing right over the gun into my face....bounced right off my glasses. That surprised me ...*PLONK*...

The gun is a lot of fun to shoot -- I'm used to shooting .45ACPs, .357s, .44s...and so comparatively the recoil of the 9mm in an all-steel 1911 gun is pleasant -- feels like you could just shoot all day long.

My only quibbles are that the 2 magazines seem to have different spring strengths -- doesn't appear to impact the function, just a qualitative observation on my part. And, there is a hellacious ugly hand-dremeled 3-digit fractional serial number on the inside/bottom of the slide. For all the effort SA goes through to dehorn these guns....WTF? My older SA doesn't have this mark. Also, while the slide-to-frame fit is very tight, the slide (on the left rear of the gun) overhangs the frame by just smidge. Odd, but again, doesn't affect the function of the gun. Cosmetically it bugs me that an ~$800 gun would have fit n finish issues like this. But, I buy guns to SHOOT them, so I don't worry too much about cosmetic stuff.

So - upshot is, as a 1911 fan, I'd heartily recommend this gun. I really prefer fixed sights, and this is the only 9mm 1911 that has 'em. And as I've said, I bought the 9mm so I could have something less expensive to shoot more often than my .45 or .357 or 44. And for that, this gun fits the bill like a dream.

The last 3 digit of the serial number is etched at the bottom of the slide so as to ensure mating of slide and frame at the factory. The frames and slides of SA are made in Brazil so to ensure the right slide goes with the right frame (as fitted at the factory) the last 3 digits of the S/N is etched on the bottom of the slide. It is hidden, right?

Yep - you're right, it is hidden. Your explanation makes sense -- I just wonder why they didn't stamp it more cleanly at the factory...

      Will post pics later.

Thanks for the report. I am planning to get an SA in 9mm sometime next month. By the way, my Kimber also had the numbers engrave under slide. Apparently, it's not just an SA thing.

I have the exact same SA 9 mm and love it.

I saw someone at Reeds last night shooting a SA 9mm. It looked pretty sweet. I was thinking it might be nice to have one as 9mm is much cheaper to shoot than .45.

I picked one up sometime around the new year, and have 600 rnds thorugh it. I think I had two failrues to feed, both within the first 100 rounds (and it wasn't me who was shooting it). Great shooter, easy on the hands. So far I've replaced the ILS stuff with a magwell MSH from S&A, and dropped the mainspring to 17lbs. Trigger pull went from 4.5lb to 5lb, still respectable. With the old MSH and 17lb mainspring I had it down to 4lb even.

They are Novak fiber sights. I used them for my tactical match (this photo is around a month old).

After 6 months, the plastic (specifically the one in the front) start to deteriorate.

I talked to Novak and they were nice enough to give me a good deal to replace the original site with a Tricijon night site instead.

                    Of course, IMHO.

You gotta love these 9mm 1911s. Can't beat single action shooting w/ the 9mm price. This has always been on my want list, its just going to have to wait.

I used mines for Action Pistol shooting:

Joel, what kind of mag bumpers do you have on those mags? I just got some Metalform 9mm mags in and the Pachmayr bumpers don't fit on em.

I ordered my mags from Metalform with the bumpers already installed.... I'm not at home right now to see if they are branded.
