CZ v.s. XD, which is a better value?

I have been reading alot on the Springfield XD series of pistols and I'm currently obsessed with CZ pistols. Since they're priced in the same ball park, I can't help but to do a comparison (instead of the glock comparison on similarity).

Now I see CZ as being very ergonomically sound, extreamly accurate (i own a 75B) with all steel construction (old school but durable) but doesn't always cycle HP ammo reliably.

Although I don't own a XD pistol, but I've been doing alot of research on them. From what I've read it seems like you simply can't go wrong with one, it's extreamly reliable, accurate, very ergonomic and the safety features are revolutionary.

So now my question is this, which gun is a better value? Since they're priced around the same and are two different guns I would like to compare it in 4 different categories. 1. Reliability with all ammo type. 2. accuracy. 3. durability. 4. safety in condition 1 carry.

advice would be highly appreciate if you own both pistols, I'm shopping for a new Pistol. And after passing up the HK due to it's high sticker price I've fallen back on either an old reliable CZ or a new exciting XD. But I simply can't decide and I appreciate any advice.

Hard question to answer even though they are two totally different guns. I own XD-9 sub compact and a CZ-PO1. Both have gobbled up every type of ammo with 100% reliability. both are more accurate than I can shoot. Both are constructed superbly however I like the finish on my CZ way more than my XD. Not really sure what condition 1, I am assuming its one in the chamber? In that case XD is striker fired with a grip safety ala 1911, and the CZ has a decocker with a full DA trigger throw. Personally I like the control of my CZ much more. If I was to pick between the two it would be the CZ all day. Nothing against the superb XD, I just prefer the controls and ergonomics of my PO1.
    Hope this helps.

I have shot both, my uncle let me shoot 50 rounds through his CZ-85 while antelope hunting in Montana and I have fallen inlove with it. I am currently saving up for a cz-75 as the 85 is not on the safe list here. My brother has a 4 inch service XD-9 and I found it to be reliable but not as accurate. I'll end up getting both if money permits

        1. Both cz and hd should have no problem with any kind of decent HP ammo. End of story. If your cz75 has problem feeding HP rounds it means you have some kind of problem with this particular gun. May be you need to exchange recoil spring with Wolff one. May be you need to polish ramp... May be you need to talk to gunsmith. May be it was crappy ammo. But under no condition you should think that cz have design flow that prevents it from reliably feeding HP rounds.
        2. I think cz is more accurate gun. Even though XD very sound ergonomically type of a trigger XD have (ie DAO variation ) doesn't promote accuracy. That doesn’t mean it is inaccurate. It surely more accurate than I am. It definitely accurate enough for any practical purpose short of competition target shooting. There is a reason why all target shooters using SA trigger and XD doesn’t have it.
        3. cz has proven itself being very durable pistol. It did so on battle field and in police service in many courtiers around the world. Minimal maintenance will give this gun many many years of trouble free service. Durability of XD is remains to be seen. I think finish is crappy, but outside of it there is seems to be no reasons why it wouldn’t be very reliable. However something to think about – very few ranges carry XDs. Is it a function of iut being fairly new pistol or range masters don’t thin kit can take range type of abuse – who knows.
        4. Being DAO pistol XD doesn’t really have condition 1. Condition 1 means cocked and locked and there is nothing to “cock” in DAO system. It is absolutely safe to carry chambered round in XD as with any DAO system. That is why IMHO DAO systems makes for better self-defense weapons – gun is ready to fire without playing with any safeties. But it is my opinion. Now cz can be carried “cocked and locked” however I don’t think that manufacturer itself recommend it. They basically pushing ( at least that how I read it) carrying chambered gun with hammer down. I read it somewhere that cz safety fairly easily disengaged and can’t be relayed upon for “cock and lock” carry.

Both cz and xd are wonderful guns. I have couple of czs and my friend owes xd and I've shot it a lot. This year plan to acquire xd45. You can’t go wrong with either.

+1 for CZ , as I own two or them. And not one problem.

I am going through the same dilemma right now for my next handgun purchase....a XD, or CZ75, or S&W M&P or maybe even something else. I have a Kimber 1911 already, so I want something different. All the new goodies that were out at the SHOT show this year didn't help my decision making...so many cool guns, not enough money.

I'd like to hear a good review of the cz 75 tactical-sports.

anyways..XD vs. CZ the cz is a better value and you can get parts for it since gunsmithing and parts aren't the sole domain of the manufacturer with a lifetime warranty.

I'm not too fond of springfields lifetime warranty on a $200 gun they import from croatia and double the price for the honor of putting their name on it. They import every damn thing..basically it is like charles daly with a more historical name. Outside of their M1A's that used to be built with surplus usgi stuff, I don't see a reason to get too excited about them. the cz is European..kind of like the Audi of handguns if you will.

Sounds like you answered your own question. I've read that some of the Springfield XD 9 and 40s have had rust issues.

Not an issue on the XD 45s since they have the Melonite treatment. Not sure if Springfield does the Melonite for the the XD 9 and 40s now.

ETA: Springfield Armory now ships all their XD 9 and 40 pistols with the Melonite finish. They officially announced it in September 2006.

It was April/May when the running change was completed. The official announcement wasn’t made until today though. Let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.

You haven't mentioned the purpose for the gun - target, casual shooting, combat style - or a caliber. I have a CZ 97 in 45 ACP. It is very accurate and reliable, it's also very large. I have big hands & that 1st DA pull is still a bit of a stretch.

The CZ 97 is all steel & wood, CA approved and I think matches up well with any service type pistol.

I haven't tried the Springfield XD. It's probably a fine pistol, but my shooting hand is allergic to plastic.

This doesn't seem to be a real apples-to-apples comparison. I own the CZ and I think it is great for all of the reasons listed. It is durable as heck, will shoot just about anything (no +P fears with a steel gun), is extremely accurate, and has longevity on its side (parts/mods easy to come by). Sorry, I had to repeat the praise for the 75B.

But the XD is nice too and lots of people swear by them. The reason I would buy one is for the XD safety system. If you wanted something closer to cocked and locked, the XD would be better. And for a lefty like myself, the CZs righty-favoring safety (and CA's stupid list that won't allow sales of the ambi CZ85) does slow me down.

                      Get both.

this will primarily be a conceal carry pistol once i get my forms approved. and it will hit the range prob once every month. I'm a little bit torn between the calibers, I'm a good shot with 9mm but I'm terrible with the .45acp however I want something with a bit more punch. So most likely I will go with the .40 S&W.

I don't see myself shooting as much .45ACP as I would like with my budget, however I go through boxes and boxes of 100rd. Winchester White Box from Wal-Mart at the range(over a 1000 rounds through my GLOCK 17 since Oct. 2006)....as far as more punch I have my HD/"carry" pre-Y2K standard cap mags loaded with Winchester Ranger(PC Black Talons) 124gr. +P 9mm which should address the "more punch" issue. I'm not a fan of the stout recoil of the high pressure .40 S&W round.

Same gun for range and carry, you'll be comprimizing heavily on both duties.
The CZ is a great range gun, but being a steel fullsize gun it gets kinda heavy in a holster after a few hours and conceilment will be harder than with a true CCW sized pistol.

I have shot both and like the CZ better. I have a CZ75B SA, now that is a sweet gun! Accurate, reliable, and better ergonomics.
