My wife any I are talking about going camping next year when the weather warms up again. The thing is, I really have no desire to go into bear country without a .44. I know that no one can get a CCW around here short of a handwritten note from God, so I'm wondering if I'm allowed to have one on my hip. I realize that it would probably get me some strange looks from some gun-phobic liberals, but I'd rather deal with that than have a bear gnawing on my head.

Does CA allow open carry?

Unless you're in a state park that doesn't allow guns. An unloaded gun in a locked container is one thing here. Keeping it loaded on your hip is another. And when you're in an area that does allow guns, your campsite is your home and you can conceal carry in your campsite.Comment

It might be good to get an idea of the general area that the trip is intended to go to. That would help narrow the answers down.
As noted, firearms in state parks are 100% no-go, unless you are a LEO or have a CCW permit.

it depends on what county you live in on how hard it is to get a CCW...dont believe most people, it's actually not that hard, and it's good for the whole state. State law actually allows you to carry a gun concealed without a CCW while in your campsite, provided the campsite doesn't have it's own restrictions (unless it's private it probably wont). same goes for licensed hunters and fishermen partaking in hunting and fishing. it's under CA Penal code section 12027. Check out www.leginfo.ca.gov as for open carry...you can probably avoid the concern by going concealed, but it's my understanding that the same goes for open carry as concealed with respect to camping, hunting and fishing. just make sure there are no special regs like in state parks.Last edited by IrishPirate; 10-05-2009, 11:21 PM.sigpic
Most civilization is based on cowardice. It's so easy to civilize by teaching cowardice. You water down the standards which would lead to bravery. You restrain the will. You regulate the appetites. You fence in the horizons. You make a law for every movement. You deny the existence of chaos. You teach even the children to breathe slowly. You tame.

technically yes... as long as you have it in PLAIN VIEW and is unloaded... so your pistol can be in a holster and your mags in a mag pouch next to it.
but i wouldn't do it unless you could afford the legal fees, since most cops don't know the law, believe it or not, and will arrest you anyways

See Firearms in Forests and Parks for complete answers on this topic. That thread has everything you need to know about how/when you can carry in forests, parks, etc.
The link that Luck of the Irish posted, http://www.californiaopencarry.org/ , has everything you need to know about open carry everywhere else.Last edited by MudCamper; 10-06-2009, 9:58 AM.Comment

If your in a State or Federal Park - then no guns. If National Forest, then you can have guns, however, you will need to abide by the rules of the campground. LOC in public areas around the camp may be a problem since these area areas that you can not legally target shoot. The only thing that is worse than an idiot, is someone who argues with one.Comment
