holster for ATV use

My Dad and his wife are building a "cabin" in Utah and they bought Ruger GP100s (4") to carry when they are out and about on their ATVs but they need a good holster that will attach to the handlebars or somewhere else accessible on the ATV. They don't want to have it strapped to their side when they are riding. BTW they got their Utah CCWs the last time they were up there, $130 for class and paperwork for a 5yr permit with renewals costing $10 for another 5yrs.

look for a blackhawk padel holster and just remove the padel. there are three screws that you can just use to attach it directly to the atv. would only take 3 well placed holes in a fender or something. and the serpa has a positive retaining system that will keep the pistol locked in until they draw it.

To what part of the ATV are they planning on attaching the holster?

looking over what i wrote before. i would just attach it to the side of the tank shroud if possible. both my quads have a shroud around the tank and it would keep the pistol center and secure to draw.

pilotimb they would like to mount to the handlebars or somewhere that is readily accessible.

nato I don,t know if they want to drill holes since these atvs have been loaned (extended loan but loaned none the less) to them by her cousin but I'll let them know, those Serpa holsters pretty good?

So probably need something that won't permanently change the atv.

If they are carrying to be prepared for a worst case scenario, keep the firearm on your person - forget about mounting to the atv. Picture a crash with injury, and your atv just rolled down a hill - with your gun - now what?

I know you said they wanted it mounted, but I use a Safariland 6005 thigh rig when I'm riding. It's in a perfect draw position for me, it doesn't dig into my side and it stays with me if I have to bail off. I don't know who makes thigh rigs for GP100s, but it might be an option.

Maybe a Bianchi UMB84R holster? I like the flap coverring the revolver to keep mud and debris out while atv'ing. Could probably rig up a couple straps to hold it on the handlebar.

The gun should be on the person and not attached to the atv. It's only good if it's with you when you have to get off the atv. Think of any reason you might need to use a gun and then try to think of even one benefit to having it attached to the atv.

A good holster for woods carry is the old style leather M3/M7 shoulder holster. There are several good quality replicas for under $40 and they distribute the weight nicely and you can reach the gun from any position wether sitting, standing, etc.

if you are going to bring a sidearm it should be with you, I ran into a situation before when I left my vehicle in a hurry and lefted my sidearm, and got into a situation when I wish I have my sidearm with me and the problem would be done for. My truck was in view but I can't leave my post. So if you're in the wood and have a sidearm it should be on your body.

I agree with Smitty on the shoulder holster. I was out riding an ATV 20+ years ago, carrying my Colt 1911A1. I decided on a shoulder holster instead of a hip model. My ATV flipped and I landed REAL hard on my right side. Carrying that Colt in a hip holster would have probably broken some bones. In any circumstance, keep the firearm on your person.
