Ammo Storage?

New to the shooting sport and I am buying a good amount of ammo. I have ammo for my 9mm glock and my .22LR. The ammo boxes fits a total of 800 (16boxes) 9mm rounds max in their boxes.
Now I did buy 2 medium metal ammo boxes and a small one at my local surplus with good rubber seals on the lids. Inside each a have some desicant packs in each since I don't know how long the ammo will stay in there.
The boxes do take a lot of space so would it be ok to take the ammo out of their packaging so I fit more???? and how long can I keep ammo that way?!?

leave them in their boxes just pack them in slightly larger cardboard boxes not too heavy you want to be able to lift them

Unless you live in a very humid environment, you can probably pass on the dessicant. I'd only use dessicant if you are storing a lot of ammo for an extended period of time.

I'd suggest leaving the ammo in their original boxes, as it makes it much easier to take to the range (hauling around 1k rounds in an ammo tin can be a bit cumbersome if you are only going to shoot a few hundred rounds).

Right now I can only fit 800rd. of 9mm in one the ammo box. The dessicant is a 2"x2" square pack thats 1/4" flat so it does not take any space and just sits on top. So as you can see the ammo box is not very large. The only reason I have the dissicant is that I don't know how long ammo will sit in the box until it gets used up. I might be a short time or a long time!!

For range use I have a small plastic box that fits a few hundred rounds I can use so taking ammo to the range is not a problem.

Any idea how long ammo will last like this??

in their factory boxes it makes it easier to barter with than a handful in a ziplock back

I finally got around to organizing all my ammo. Took an entire night. Everything is sorted and arranged all nicely. I have no idea how many rounds. Just.... A lot.



Anyways, ammo cans are THE way to go. Period. The wooden crates on the top-right are all full of shotgun ammo. Shotgun ammo tends to last a long time and I shoot so much of it anyways that the stock rotates often enough, plus it takes up too much space for ammo cans. But for regular metallic cartridges, ammo cans. Seriously.

I've had ammo in the factory box sitting on a shelf for several years that I have shot without any problems.

I would imagine that your ammo, stored the way you described, would last for quite a long time. I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you live along the coast and get a lot of fog.

Right now I live in the San Jose area but will be moving to the Modesto/Sac area soon, if the house purchase goes through!! Hopefully!!!!!!!

So fog and humidity is not a problem!!

+1 for ammo cans. People are still shooting ammo from WWll.
