    STI frame choice

    Purely hypothetical question:
I know that they're not on the roster, (humor me) If you could have one, which one would you buy?

Would you buy the STI Frame kit

Or for $165 more, the STI Tactical frame kit:

Well, based on what I see, the only difference is the rail.

If I were building a race/carry gun, I'd skip the rail.
If the gun were for duty/tactical purposes, I might get the rail.

Since I already own a railed 1911, I'd get the standard version and buy $165 worth of ammo.
    This is my sig line.

I'd go for long dust cover, no rail, the use a non profiled slide. Kind of like this.

Ehh, im not a fan of long dust covers, though it does help with the recoil from the added weight on the front

I kinda like the rail version myself. If I already had a non-railed 1911, I'd get the railed, if I wanted a rail. Nice to have the rail if you ever wanted a light...

I think rails on handguns are silly unless you absolutely have plans to add some sort of light/laser.

                    So I vote NO rail.

Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.

All depends what you intend to build it up into... another vote for long dustcover, no rail. I have 2 2011's, one is a long dustcover limited class gun and the other is a short dustcover open class gun. Personally, I like the looks of the long dustcover frames.

My reasoning is this: Buy the long dustcover, because if you later decide you don't want or need the long dustcover for the build you have in mind you can always cut it shorter. A lot easier than adding length to a short dustcover frame if you later decided you want a long dustcover.

                          Like this.

If you want to go nuts, also get the aluminum grip module, and send it off to your favorite smith for whatever kind of grip texturing you want - checkering, stippling, scalloping, chainlink, golf ball, whatever!

Long dust cover with a rail would be an option.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

                              Hey Frank,
I thought I remembered you saying you were thinking of getting back into USPSA shooting. If so, you're talking Limited division. More weight helps tame recoil. If you also want to use it for carry or IDPA then go with the standard dustcover. I don't know if it's legal for IDPA though.
                              Have fun,
