Long range 22 pistol?

Hi all!

Another thread on long range handguns got me to thinking again. I've wanted to build a .22 pistol for fairly long range, like 75 to 100 yards, at least 50-75 yards anyway. Thinking pistol because I like a semi-auto.

Would the Ruger .22 pistol be a good choice for a fairly inexpensive build? Want a long barrel, scoped, some trigger work, for picking off certain rodents with a head about the size of a squirrel out to about 75 yards.

I haven't started searching for parts or anything, just wondering if that's a good place to start? Had one, loved it, an MK512.

I have a prewar colt woodsman that does that (has factory target grips.)

some of the old guns can be amazingly accurate... I think part of it is because any problems they may have had have had 60 years to be fixed

I think Taurus had a Revo in 22mag that shot well and could take a rail for mounting optics. Let me see if I can find a link......

Sounds like a 12" barrelled T/C Contender fits the bill. You can even get a "match grade" barrel.

I need to do some checking on aftermarket barrels, found a few for the Ruger MK's but nothing longer than 6". Ruger themselves makes the 6-7/8" MK III so maybe that would do it, not sure. Maybe a good place to start. My last one had a 5-1/2" bull barrel, nice but not quite enough.

Either the 617 with the discontinued 8 3/8" barrel, or the 41 with a 7 inch barrel. I shot both at a 50 yard target offhand with good results (I hit the target). Both are with iron sights.

Thanks! To me the whole 'barrel thing' is a little too interesting, like do I have that much spare room in my brains? All kinds of info on what's 'best' out there, and it's directly contradictory! "A 16" is BEST!" and it's proven for you, then someone else 'proves' the 18" is better etc. until another guy that can shoot the eyes out of a gnat at 100 yds in a noreaster with a 3" snubby.

Just guessing but seems it's probably manufacturing tolerances that are the real deal, and gun control. The maker who can consistently hit the magic numbers time & time again is the hot ticket and that usually mean some serious bucks for his superior equipment & machinery. The shooter who can do the same in consistent control can make up for a manufacturer who can't.

Having said that, the Ruger 6 7/8" Hunter, dialed in, might be all I need! With the right optics and goodies it might be the best cheap date for some shooting fun and rodent control, once I learn to shoot it.

Taurus no longer sells those in CA if you remember they are pulling out of CA. What comes to my mind is a S&W 617 with a 8" barrel

Exactly! It has room to grow too, once you've reached your max range with the 22lr and you still want to connect without walking your butt near the target all you need is another barrel in 223 Rem or similar varmint round. Scoped 14" bull barrels in 223 can reach those pesky varmints out to the ranges where the 22lr is dropping like a rock.

With the mark1 I am so accurate hitting the longest steel targets at angeles range in the pistol section which i believe is 100 yards away if my memory serves me right.

Buy a Ruger .22 6-7/8 barrel + a red dot + target grip.

I like my Contender Super 14 in .22lr. and would recommend it as a great long range .22. If money is no object and a semi auto is mandatory, a custom built Ruger MK I, II or III might be the ticket for you. Yes, it is possible to get a custom made long barrel for a Ruger pistol. I just bought one! I don't know who did the work or any other history of the gun. Well, I ended up with a Ruger Mk I with a 16" barrel and a detachable shoulder stock. So, now, mine's a rifle but, it is possible to find someone that would so a 14" barrel for you.
