Magnum Gun Range in Rancho Cucamonga has NIB Glocks for $519 (G17 and G19).
They also have a few on consigment that are in your range, and possibly a step up from what you can get new.
9049 9th St, Rancho Cucamonga, CA 91730
I am not affiliated with them. I just picked up a Beretta from them and know how good they are to deal with.Comment

I'd recommend going to a gun shop, finding a few that you are interested in, and then going to a range and renting those guns.
I had a Taurus chambered in 45acp for a while. I didn't think it was well constructed. The frame rails started galling after a few hundred rounds, and the fit and finish left a bit to be desired. It shot okay and was reliable. I just didn't think it would last for any length of time.Comment

It was a PT145 that I had about two years ago. I don't remember what generation it was.
If they did improve on the 3rd generation, that's good to hear. I thought their design concepts and price points were great, they just needed that extra 10% on materials, fit and finish.Comment
