I shot one GI Springfield which had a trigger only a gorilla could love. Try before you buy.

Springfield 1911s run from the basic G.I. model ($400) to full blown custom models like the Professional ($2400).

Most triggers on 1911's are relatively crisper and lighter than DA/SA triggers since 1911's are SA only.

I have two Springfield 1911s and they both have nice triggers.

I've got a Springfield Milspec that I like a lot. Accurate, reliable, great trigger - one of my favorite pistols.

The Milspec is a definite step up from the GI - better sights, lowered ejection port.

For an inexpensive starter 1911, the Taurus PT1911 is getting some pretty durn good reviews. Unfortunately, we can't get them in Cali yet...

FTF transfers have to be done at an FFL. Buyer and seller meet, show ID's, fill out paperwork. Buyer gives seller money, FFL keeps the gun for 10 days, buyer picks it up. Other requirements (safe or lock, proof of residency, handling test) are all just like buying straight from the FFL.

Springfields are nice pistols, I have 2 and working on a third.

Face to Face is actually a Private Party Transfer (PPT) for handguns. Buyer and Seller meet at a FFL Dealer and do the paperwork (DROS).

Yes, Springfield's are good out of the box, though there are a wide variety. I would say they're on par with Kimber. You get what you pay for.

I have had 2. 1 was a .45 loaded model that always jambed up, sold it.
2nd was a 9mm target model that would stove pipe also, sold it.

I've had no problems with full-sized Springers out of the box but had to send back to SA my ultra-compact to get worked on. My next compact will be a Kimber.

how does FTF usually happen fee wise? both parties pay 25 dros plus whatever the gun store charges each of you?

I believe only the buyer pays $25 for dros and whatever the FFL charges for doing the transfer. Varies from FFL to FFL.

Correct buyer usually pays the fee unless some other arrangement has been made. DROS 25.00 Plus FFL fee and dont forget the infamous lock fee.

IIRC a PPT can only be charged a $25 DROS fee and a $10 fee to the dealer. This is only for a FTF transaction.

BTW, I was eyeing the TRP in the for sale forums, thanks for picking it up and getting it out of my mind.

One thing to keep in mind when considering a Springfield is their outstanding customer service. If you have a problem with any of their 1911s, you basically send it back and they fix it right for free.

My buddy just sent his GI model back to them, after having 2 different smiths try to "fix" it. Springfield put in a brand new barrel, a new front sight post, and a new extractor, and sent it back to him -- all free!

That thing shoots sweet now.

He had some bad luck with his, but that is unusual, and the important thing is they made it right even after 2 other guys compounded his problems.

My mil-spec had zero problems and shot great right out of the box.

They also pay for the shipping to and from SA. Include a copy of your shipping receipt when you ship your firearm and SA will mail you back a check after you receive your firearm back.

In regards to the lifetime warranty, it is apparently transferable. When I returned my ultra-compact for warranty work I did not include proof of purchase showing I was the original buyer.

I have had FFL's charge me more than 10.00 to do a transfer. Of course, I do not go back. I figure a few extra bucks is not worth the hassle of finding another FFL.

I think most 1911s have a dissappointing trigger pull straight from the box. I've owned about 30 various 1911s and figured out years ago that I'd have to learn how to clean them up myself if I was going to be happy with the pull. I read and learned and made mistakes and bought a jig.

I have a full size Springfield Loaded model and it shoots vey well - functions perfectly. I bought their 3" bbl version and it would not extract - and I mean from the 1st shot it would not extract at all. The extractor was so obviously wrong it would not even cycle rounds by hand. How it left the factory is beyond me. I sold it & went back to my Detonics.

I like the Springfields in general, but by new fav 1911 is the Dan Wesson Bobtail. Has the smoothest & tightest lock up I've seen since Les Baer. You might want to check them out.
