Need LEO help on DROS in OC

I bought a S&W revolver on gunbroker. By the time it arrived at my FFL dealer it had fallen off the CA DOJ list. My FFL said that if a LEO was willing to DROS it then I could still complete the transfer.

Are there any LEO's in Orange County willing to help?

    TIA,
    Jay

If this isn't a setup, then your SOL.

Why would you get a gun that was within days of falling off the list? Best you can hope for is to send it back on your dime and maybe the seller might be understanding and give you a partial refund.

I wouldn't bet on an LEO helping out on this, and the longer you wait the less likely the seller will be willing to deal with you. On top of that you have most likely added a "No Sale to California" person on GB after his dealings with you. It's our job as buyers to make sure everything is ok, before we go off on GB and start transactions.

I think it can be confirmed that an alien xenomorph is absolutely no match for good ole' Alabama black snake!

If you are lucky there may be a LEO that will buy the gun, at a discount...

what S&W revolver? I don't see any recently decertified models, and do see a couple models that have Sept 2010 expirations, which looks like they just got updated for another year.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Actually I did offer advice. You need to contact the seller and fix this, as I said the longer you wait the less likely he may be willing to help out.

As for an LEO buying it for you then selling it back, probably not going to happen. They may be willing to buy it for a discount(as stated), so that you may recoup some of your loss.

An LEO buying a off roster gun for a friend is a dicey situation that they probably wouldn't want anyone to know about, but to do it for a 1st time poster who solicited it. Don't see that happening at all.

Which model specifically is it? And you're sure it's off permanently?

You may want to pursue the "LE help" in a not so public way - anyone you shoot with, friend of a friend?

Depending on your FFL's agreeability, you may be able to try another approach but it requires cooperation from all & work from the seller.

Single action revolvers are exempt from the list. If your revolver meets OAL requirements - generally a K frame with 4" bbl does it - the seller can remove the DA sear from the Smith (takes 10 minutes) and throw it away (in an envelope with your address) and the gun can be DROS'd as single action exempt.

Smith & Wesson, Colt and even H & R made what many would refer to as DA revolvers but were actually single action only - they just look like DA revolvers. Looks don't count, function does.

You'll need to be pretty good at convincing folks to help you, but if you can I think this approach technically works and satisfies CA law.

As an aside, you said "by the time it arrived" it had fallen off the list. I'm assuming it wasn't an inordinate amount of time or that the seller dropped the ball and waited a month to ship, correct?

Count me in as a skeptic as well - what model Smith are we talking about?
The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.

The only contact I have who is a LEO hasn't returned my call.

I have another contact who may know a LEO that may help. He just returned from europe but I will see him tomorrow.

Not sure how to tell if it's permanently off the list or not. I believe it was on the list until either 9-9-09 or 9-12-09

                      S&W 66-5, RB K frame, 4 inch barrel.

My FFL has a gunsmith in-house and I may look at the SA option if all else fails.

This deal has soured me. I bought this to fit to a pair of Fuzzy Farant grips purchased for $150 which were then stolen by a postal employee. Think I will stick to C&R guns, lol.

                      Appreciate your help dfletcher

I don't see the 66-5 being dropped and I don't see it listed - I see the 66-6 listed, which makes me think the 66-5 was never on the DOJ list. Maybe I missed something?

Make nice to your friend's LE, worth a try.

There may be a difference between the gun coming in state in DA mode & being converted before you take possession. IIRC, the times this has been done the gun was SA mode when shipped.

I wouldn't get soured, live and learn and do the homework in advance. Buying guns in CA isn't the same fun game as buying in TX, AZ or about 45 other good states.

66-5 hasn't been made since 04 when it was replaced by the 66-6, which only lasted a year or two. So S&W hasn't made a 66 model since either 05 or 06. The gun hasn't been on the list for years if it was..

So you ordered a gun that was not on the list at all. Again some strange things going on here. 1st post , claiming pistol just dropped of roster, when it hasn't been on for years if it ever was.

Or it could be you just didn't know about the roster(and don't want to admit it) ordered a gun , then your FFL told you it was a no go and you somehow found Calguns, read up on the LEO exemption and the roster not applying to PPT, but I still have my suspicions and can almost guarantee we wont see you around much anymore.

Anyways for the single shot exemption, it has to come into the state that way is my understanding, can't be converted at the FFL to pass the DROS. If that was the case an AR pistol would be a much easier thing to acquire.
