Troubleshooting suggestions

Was out shooting my XD-9 tonight and ran into a myriad of failures: FTEs, a couple failures to return to battery, and with a few exceptions, the slide absolutely refused to lock back after the last round.

Possible culprits so far are the ammo (range-sold reloads) or limp wristing on my part. I'm pretty sure it wasn't mag-related, since I had two mags with me and was having the same problems on both. The slide catch also seems to be working fine when I pull it back manually. I've had the gun since early August and have been shooting it weekly with no failures, most recently about a week ago. I'm going to try shooting it with some different ammo as soon as I can track some down, and also pay a little more attention to my technique.

That said, can anyone suggest anything else I might want to look into?

Man its got to be the junk ammo if the same thing is going on in both guns....I wouldnt even worry about it, just get some good name brand stuff and try that.I WILL NOT shoot anyone elses reloads in any of my guns EVER.

Oh, sorry, my OP was unclear - when I referred to having "two of them" with me, it was two mags, not two guns.

I'd asked the rangemaster if they'd had any other complaints about this batch of their reloads, but the answer was a negative. I agree with you generally though, I'm wary of shooting others' reloads. But until my back-ordered ammo arrives, reloads are currently my only option for target shooting (either that or blowing through some of my HP ammo).

I think he was saying he had two mags not two guns.


I also don't think that you could be limp wristing the thing that often if you know what it is and that it could be a problem, unless your and 80lb weakling and I don't think you are. Maybe once but not that often.. That's the limpwrist thing not the 80lb weakling thing. Was the thing lubed well enough?

I last cleaned and lubed it probably a little under a month ago; about 200 rounds down the pipe between that cleaning and the start of shooting tonight.

I'd suspect the range reloads.

Clean and lube it before your next range trip. Where are you located in the SF Bay Area? I can give you a box or two of factory brand ammo to test it. You can "pay" me back when your back-ordered ammo arrives. I go to Jackson Arms frequently. Send me a PM if you are interested.

I was actually using Jackson's reloads tonight. I'm heading up to the Cow Palace show this weekend, so I may just try to get my hands on some factory ammo while I'm there. If I'm unsuccessful, I may take you up on your offer. Thanks!

A little squirt of CLP can go a long way, most of the XD's i've played with need to be lubed up fairly well. Not dripping but wet. It sounds like bad reloads to me though.

It was definitely the ammo. I was passing through the South Bay today, so I stopped by Reed's and put 150 rounds of Blazer Brass through. Not a hiccup, and the kick was noticeably stronger than what I was getting on those reloads from Jackson Arms. Moral of the story: I need to get more factory ammo.

I'm thinking you just got a bad batch; see if they will help you out? There's absolutely nothing wrong with reloads as long as they are done properly. I use nothing but reloads for all my handgun ammo and almost never have any issues.
