Ruger Blackhawk

Just picked up a Ruger Blackhawk in 30 cal carbine. Not crazy about the grips that came with the gun. Looking at Hogue soft grips. Anyone make this switch?

Hogues for Ruger revolvers are so ugly they make the baby Jesus cry, so that's a nonoption for me.

The smaller Colt-SAA-sized grip frames on the New Vaquero and 50th Anniv 357 Flattop Blackhawk are much better, IMHO.

I agree that the full-size Blackhawk grip is not that comfortable [esp on guns w/heavy loads!] - so that's why I like Bisleys.

They aren't as nice as the ones that Bill shows above, and some fitting is required, but they fit my big hands MUCH better than the thin factory grips. Even .357 loads aren't bad to shoot. Plus the price was right. I've even gotten compliments on them.

I've got a Ruger Single Six .22 and a .357 Blackhawk and they take the same grips. I bought the black rubber Hogues (with finger grooves) and tried them on both. The Hogues were an improvement over the stock grips on both guns for my purposes (Bullseye-style target shooting), but they are too big (I have small/medium hands) and the finger-grooves didn't match my fingers perfectly, although they do allow a very consistent grip from shot to shot. And - yes - they are very, very ugly.

A couple of weeks ago I got a set of black, rubber Pachmayr "Presentation" grips and put those on the Blackhawk. They look much better and feel slightly better than the Hogues (they are big grips, but don't feel too bad, although I do wish they were smaller). I haven't had a chance to shoot the Pachmayrs, and I'm not sure if they will be as consistent as the Hogues because the grip shape may allow my grip to be slightly more variable than the Hogues.

For plinking / field use, I think the Pachmayrs would be the best choice. For more serious target shooting, it depends on which fits your hand best.

I used a set of Pachmayr's on my Blackhawk (.357) and Super Blackhawk (.44 mag) and ended up removing them. The natural 'roll' of the single action frame when magnum rounds were fired caused these grips to abrade into the web of hand while firing causingg the rubber to cut into the web of my hand. I ended up putting the stock wood grips back on and allowed the gun to roll (and wood grips to naturally roll) while the gun was fired. More comfortable for me at least.

Again - thainks for the info. I came with fairly ugly plastic grips so some sort of change is in order. Think I'll go for some wood ones instead.

Nice stags! Not as comfy as Hogues, but good looking.

Let us know how the gun shoots. I've been looking for an inexpensive .30 carbine Blackhawk for years, let a few slip by, and I think I've missed my opportunity.

I shoots great. Real tack driver. I Did a different load than the one I use for my carbine. Couple of pieces of advice I got. Make sure that you trim all the cases. Longer cases can be difficult to extract. Also make sure you have good ear protection. It is really loud. It is also a real flame thrower. I suspect if you shot it at night it would be "interesting".
