    Home Defense Shooting

Can a hollow point 9mm round make it through a wall? For example can it pass through two layers of drywall, if it doesn't hit a stud?

Yes indeed and it will make it through more than just the two layers.

The FBI's service round evaluation requires penetration through walls and windshields. And they are issuing something very similar to the new Winchester PDX1 round. Most recent issue of American Rifleman had a good article with testing.

I would say it would go through at least 6 layers of sheetrock and more...
(as it is slowing down and losing it's shape.) Maybe I need to do a test on this... (Not that it has not been done before) But fun to do the testing.

in a nutshell hollowpoints tend to flattenout and ball ammo tends to penetrate more

Both could potentially exit your home's exterior depending on how your house is made, but lucky is right.

If you are concerned about over penetration, look into frangible ammo or something like the Glaser rounds.

Were you asking because you don't want penetration, or because you do?
If you can't make them see the light, make them feel the heat.

Anything that will reliably do enough damage to stop a threat will go through an interior wall like it's made of paper, and anybody who tells you otherwise is ignorant or selling an overpriced and inferior product.

Supposedly the best home defense round is shotgun birdshot.will take you out at close range but not take out people in the next room.

But I think i would opt for a Glazer or Magsafe in a handgun. Dont want something sticking out in front of you as you try and clear corners in your domocile...

OR a closet monkey would also work..(close relative to the Trunk Monkey)

Even the lowly .22 lr will penetrate a number of sheets of dry wall. Sheetrock is not meant to stop bullets. Hollowpoints are made to expand inside the human body, thereby transferring more bullet energy to your adversary. Not to be safer inside the home. Shot placement still counts for more than anything. But a hollow point is somewhat less likely to penetrate your adversary and continue on damaging people and property.
