I've been told by a fellow cal gunner that it's illegal to buy a slide and frame combo from Wilson Arms. http://www.wilsoncombat.com/a_440cfs.asp

It is not illegal to buy those two things. Registering the combo in CA might be a problem. -
Here is a question ; Could you in theory, you could have it built by a gunsmith and then DROS as one of the Wilson rostered handguns ?Anyone press will hear the fat lady sing.

The frames cannot be drop tested and so cannot be put on the roster of handguns available to purchase by the California commoner.

Well, I guess you could as many FFLs don't know anything about the Wilson models. But this gun would not be the one that is rostered and thus illegal.

What you can do is buy an approved Wilson pistol then have the Wilson custom shop make it over into whatever you want.

That's the best solution.
One of my friends did just that, dealing with Wilson from the getgo, and Wilson was very helpful -he went through DROS on the listed pistol, shipped it back to Wilson the day he picked it up, and got back "his" listed pistol with all the stuff he couldn't get straight away in about a month iirc.The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.
