    Borrowing a handgun

Please forgive my ignorance on this topic, as I am rather new to handguns. My girlfriends father wants to let me borrow his Taurus 357 to try out (we were talking and he found out that I wanted a 357). My question is if it is legal to borrow a handgun for a period of a week or so. I am also wondering if I do borrow it do i need his registration papers with it? I don't even know if it would be registered seeing as he purchased it a very long time ago. Finally, is there anything I should know about the gun? Ammo to avoid, anything like that, it is not mine so I would not want to do anything to damage it. Thanks in advance for the help.

I think all you need is a HSC if it's for a short period of a week like you're saying.
Lord, make my hand fast and accurate.
Let my aim be true and my hand faster
than those who would seek to destroy me.
Grant me victory over my foes and those who wish to do harm to me and mine.
Let not my last thought be 'If I only had my gun."
And Lord, if today is truly the day you call me home, let me die in an empty pile of brass.

If you have a HSC, you can borrow it up to 30 days at a time.
If you do not have a HSC, the owner of the handgun needs to be with you during the duration of the loan, which can not be longer than 3 days.

          Penal Code 12078
(d)(1) Subdivision (d) of Section 12072 shall not apply to the infrequent loan of firearms between persons who are personally known to each other for any lawful purpose, if the loan does not exceed 30 days in duration and, when the firearm is a handgun, commencing January 1, 2003, the individual being loaned the handgun has a valid handgun safety certificate.
          (2) Subdivision (d) of Section 12072, and subdivision (b) of Section 12801 shall not apply to the loan of a firearm where all of the following conditions exist:
          (A) The person loaning the firearm is at all times within the presence of the person being loaned the firearm.
          (B) The loan is for a lawful purpose.
          (C) The loan does not exceed three days in duration.
          (D) The individual receiving the firearm is not prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm pursuant to Section 12021 or 12021.1 of this code, or by Section 8100 or 8103 of the Welfare and Institutions Code.
          (E) The person loaning the firearm is 18 years of age or older.
          (F) The person being loaned the firearm is 18 years of age or older.

Perfect, thats what I was looking for, thank you. It looks like it should be no problem seeing as I have my HSC. Anyone know about the registration? Did hand guns bought long ago not need to be registered?

I wouldn't worry about the reg if he bought it legally, just transport it legally.

Right. Registration is not required - see

The gun was purchased legally, so no problems there. And I will make sure to transport it in accordance with the law. Sounds like we're GTG, thank you for the info!

As for your ammo questions, the only thing I would want you to know about a .357 if you don't already is that you can run .38 Special loads through any .357 revolver for cheaper shooting and with reduced recoil. Might be a good idea to grab some .38 for practice or if your girl is gonna go shooting with you.

Also, make sure you buy .357 Mag and not .357 Sig
