I'm researching the best way to ship my Glock 22 from California to Guatemala. Looking into UPS Next Day Air, etc. but wanted to get any tips or advice from the experts here. Any info greatly appreciated- thanks!

I know hunters take their guns when they go to Africa and stuff....but handguns may be a different story- Wouldn't this be considered "exporting" a weapon?

are u shipping it to yourself or selling it out of the country ?
It needs to be handled by someone with an export license form the US gvt. ITAR comes to mind.

I would be shipping it to myself. I just googled ITAR...too bad it's not a shipping company ;-) I'll read up on it tho.

This may not be as easy as I thought it would be. Surely there must be a shipping service that specializes in this?

Have you checked to make sure you can have it there? Guatamala has some stringent rules about firearms in "military" calibers, as do most Central American countries.

and read up on ITAR... its pretty important... I've had to deal with it at work before. Not only can it get you in trouble, it can also get the shipping company in trouble.

And, I believe there are a few laws in various countries you have to be a citizen to be able to possess firearms in that country.

I only have anecdotal knowledge of other expats in Guate who have guns. But yeah, that's not exactly solid info. For what it's worth, I got the G22 because it's .40 and not military caliber 9mm. Well, thanks for the replies- looks like I better do some more digging.

I think you still need to get an export license from the US State department. Things may have changed since I sent an AR receiver to Australia back in the early 1990's, but the state department requires export licenses for handguns and rifles. They really don't care much about you shooting a foreign national outside of the US and will give you the export license.
The real problem was getting an import license at the other end. Guatemala being what it is, maybe you won't have as much trouble getting an import license as in other countries. After all, their military sells guns to the drug smuggling operations.

If you are going to be there for awhile, get a lawyer there to take you through the process (cough*bribes*cough). Then have somebody here ship it too you.
My other home is in Panama, and I'm pretty sure Guatamala is still pretty much the same.
