I go to the range at least once a week and I am always amazed at the targets I see in other lanes being shot at three yards with groups of about a foot. There are some really bad shooters out there. I have to renew my CCW every two years. The next time I will be 81. If I can still shoot well enough to qualify then I'm still in the game.

How about at 12 1/2 yards?

40 Years ago at Rio Hondo Police Academy they use to teach revolver shooters to go Double Action at 7 and 15 yards. At 25 yards, go Single Action for more precision.

We hired a young man who had put himself thru the Academy. Back then we were doing a "Hogan's Alley". Bad Guy Targets were at 5, 10 and 20 yards. He easily cleaned the targets at 5 and 10 yards. But he did not engaged any targets at 20 yards. You could actually see him thinking, DA or SA and he never engage so he held six rounds.

He went on to become a lumberjack in Oregon.

I have many of Massad Ayoob's books and I have read them. I have also met the man; I took the MAG40 and the MAG80. They were both worth the money and the time. The best book I ever read about using deadly force was his "The Gravest Extreme." If you carry, you owe it to yourself to read this book. I have loaned a copy many times and never gotten it back.

I never got my copy of "The Gravest Extreme" back either. Now I would think it is a bit dated.

This is interesting because it begs the question, "When is it time to hang-up your guns forever?" If you can't see, you can't aim, and you can't shoot. How many of us are honest about our degrading physical bodies. My guess is that we would rely on our families to tell us when we are done with guns. However, how many old gun enthusiasts listen to their family, especially their wives? I guess, If you can still pass the basic NRA pistol course, you are still good to carry and shoot.

Well, I'll be 74 tomorrow and just finished qualifying in my CCW renewal course with 4 handguns (3 autos, 1 revolver) and was complimented on my shooting skills by the instructor.

I don't agree with his view on bifocal glasses, I have my close vision prescription at the bottom of the lenses. With the top section I can focus easily from 2' to infinity. My ophthalmologist is also a target shooter and big game hunter so he knew exactly how to configure my glasses. They work perfectly. I do agree on the use of fiber optic sights, I have them on most of my handguns (autos and revolvers). No fan of anything electronic on any firearm.

So, I think I'm good to go.
