Ruger LCR at accuracy @ 25 yards

Anyone do any target work with the LCR 1.75 barrel.38 at 25 yards?
Wonder if you can place 10 out of 10 rounds in the score area of CCW qualification target?

How big is the target? The poor sights are the biggest limitation

I bet you could. I told a story here a few years ago about letting another Calgunner (Vinnie) shoot my LCR.

He had never shot one. He is however a very good shot.

With his very first aimed shot he smoked a broken fragment of a clay bird that was laying on a berm maybe 60 yards away, maybe more. And yes, he was aiming at it. With a snub LCR .38

He ended up buying that gun from me.

Here is the thread where I told the story

Here is a video I made of a technique that Vinnie showed me on trigger use with revolvers. You use the thumb of your support hand and hook it over your trigger finger, and use it to assist with the trigger pull. It really helps keep the gun from coming off target when pulling the trigger. Great for target shooting!

Probably? I carry wadcutters though, I'd be quite a bit slower with .357s.

Very interesting indeed. I'm gonna have to try that. Lord knows I need all the help I can get.
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

Typically no. My LCRs are for CCW and HD and I practice at 7-10 yards which are practical self defense ranges.

I have other .38 Special revolvers that are more suited to accuracy at farther distances.

LCR's can be hit or miss. Some people get exceptional accuracy out of them while some guns are pretty bad even from a rest.

I was really struggling with one thinking I was the problem until the range shop I bought it at put it in a rest and test fired it, getting a 5" group at 5 yards. It sounded like mine was not unique and the shop took it back and applied the credit toward a S&W j-frame.

If you get a good one, that's great, but if you are struggling with it, it really might be the gun itself and try another one.

                Good luck!

“LCR's can be hit or miss” ? Are not all guns ? I suppose some guns could be …. “miss and miss”

I have tried every local shop in my area for good quality or match grade wadcutters without success. The Turners employee even asked me what a wadcutter was. No one can even order them, out of stock. I wanted to try a brand with a good reputation for CCW like Georgia Arms, but shipping on one box was as much as the ammo. At other shops, the only defensive load for .38 was +P, which I don?t really need. It seems that .38 is an afterthought in ammo production.

This is why I roll my own. My 148 grain berry's plated hollow based wadcutter load is being experimented with right now. I started with 3.5 grains of W231 but lowered the charge to 3.0 grains on the next batch. More consistent results out of my S&W Model 15 and Ruger SP-101.

I?ve never shot an LCR but I?ve passed the backup/off duty qual with a SW 642 with a perfect score every year for about 15 years and it includes 6 rounds from the 25.
Buying a safe and sane firework is like paying a hooker for a hug. I do not see the appeal in it.

That's commendable. As a 642 owner may I ask what ammo you used for that qual?

What kind of qualifications require a 25 yard shot with a CCW?!

I really do like the LCR trigger, and I’m sure with consistent practice you’ve got a better chance with an LCR than a S&W… I qualified with a Charter so anything sounds easy to me!

Yeah it is getting really hard to find wadcutter, either semi or full , ammo from the major manufacturers. That is why I reload. I use Oregon Trail 158 grain SWC for .38 and lite .357 rounds. Win 231 for .38 and Unique for the Maggie?s. I am sure the folks at the indoor range I use hate me for the smoke.

I use Berrys 148 grain HBWC plated bullets over 3 grains of Bullseye for a mild, accurate round out of any revolver I own.

Oh and the trick about using your opposing thumb to assist with D/A shots was very well known in the late seventies when I shot PPC.
