    1980 Electroless nickel Colt Python

I got this in a local pawn shop in 1999. It sat there for a year at $475. I told my wife I should buy that thing and she said, "Just put it on layaway" (thanks, babe!). I had $200 on me and did just that for the balance. I assumed it was stainless but was thrilled to find it to be electroless nickel/coltguard. Ot hopefully not an after market plating job.

      1980 Electroless nickel Colt Python

Good lord. Give us the 80?s or 90?s back, please. Thanks for sharing op. I?ve been dreaming about a case hardened 4.75? Colt 45 SAA new old stock for a while now but they want 4k. Those 4.25? pythons are beautiful too, for 2-4k now right?

Others can confirm or refute it, but I’m pretty sure that Colt offered their Pythons in electroless nickel finish.

Some Pythons did in fact get a electroless nickel finish. As it sounds like you only have the gun, no box, no documentation, it would be of great value to spend the nominal cost for a Colt factory letter.

While it may merely confirm the obvious, it goes a long way to adding value, to peace of mind of the owner in validation of expectation, but to any potential buyers abating any sense of doubt or unknowns.

They did between around 1980 until stainless guns came out in I believe 1982. There was a rumor that Colt did not do the finish, though, and a company named Nitex in Texas did, run by an Ed House. One factory letter on a Python like mine has a note by Colt at the bottom saying flat out that this company and the owner by name did the finish. So my gun is in the correct time frame to be original. But only a latter will tell. I've gotten three letters. $100 and what used to be three months is now much longer unless you pay more.

                  Double pinned front sight-nice.
Not sure if the grips are original, shouldn't they be checkered?

The gun came with rubber Pachs but I found a pair of Python grips (not the older full checkered ones) at the flea market for seven bucks. I then did something that I realized later was real stupid. I felt they were too thick so I sanded them down, oiled them, and replaced the gold meds for those silver ones. so I turned a $275 set of grips into, well, a $7 pair. But about four years ago I found a pair of original Python grips on Craigs List for $25. I still thought they were too thick so sold them for $275.

While not too well known, but there is plenty of recorded evidence that the bullets go faster with eltro nickel Colts.
