    .45 Colt Ammo Question

Picked up some Winchester Super X .45 Colt ammo the other day. It is loaded with a 255 gr. lead-round nose bullet and is labeled for "target/range" use. I know that some modern loaded ammo is not suitable for use in older designed firearms and because of that I'm wondering if the Winchester Super X .45 Colt ammo I bought is safe to use in my Colt SAA.

What generation is the single action army?
If it's a 2nd or 3rd gen I'd say your not going to have a problem.

No, Winchester and Remington load their 45 Colt down specifically for that purpose. There are a lot of old weak guns out there and they don't any of them being destroyed and causing injury with regular factory ammo.

The original black powder 45 Colt launched that 255 grain bullet anywhere from 935 to 1000fps from a 7.5" colt. The modern Winchester and Remington loads launch it at about 860 fps from the same length barrel.

If you want to really see what that Colt can do, try shooting some black powder loads. Feels like a 45ACP +P. If you don't like cleaning up after black powder, try some of Buffalo Bore's Standard Pressure Heavy .45 Colt safe to fire in any modern 45 Colt manufactured after WWII (which is what your 3rd Generation is).

          STANDARD PRESSURE 45 Colt velocities

          Item 3E - 255 gr.
          S&W Mt. Gun (4 inch) 949 fps
          Colt SAA 2nd generation (4 3/4 inch) 983 fps
Colt NF SAA 2nd generation (5.5 inch) 984 fps
Custom Ruger Bisley (5.5 inch Pac-Nor bbl) 1047 fps
Colt NF SAA 3rd generation ( 7.5 inch) 1053 fps

          Item 3F - 200 gr.
          S&W Mt. Gun (4 inch) 1015 fps
          Colt SAA 2nd generation (4 3/4 inch) 1047 fps
Colt NF SAA 2nd generation (5.5 inch) 1038 fps
Custom Ruger Bisley (5.5 inch Pac-Nor bbl) 1136 fps
Colt NF SAA 3rd generation ( 7.5 inch) 1112 fps
