Trigger won't reset when slide goes forward quickly or sometimes shooting

Hey guys let me start by saying this handgun was the first gun I bought many many years ago so it has a great deal of sentimental value amd that's pretty much it. I have now much more expensive firearms and have a nice collection in my walk in vault. With that said you can cringe that I am going to ask about the smith and Wesson sigma or sw9ve...

So this thing has been sitting in the vault for a while and I decided to take it to the range a few days ago. (Obviously the gun is always cleaned and everything is in as good shape as that old of a gun can be. The gun loads fine, fires fine, when the slide goes back and comes back sometimes the trigger doesn't reset.... So I brought it home opened it up looking at the springs, the slide, the sear housing etc and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. I noticed if I rack the slide back and forward, trigger is fine. If I rack the slide back and just let it go trigger won't click/reset.... I also am able to recreate it if I do not pull the trigger back all the way, just basically pull it back to the point of it breaking then it's fine and will reset. If I pull the trigger back all the way and rack the slide trigger won't reset.. I'm stuck and frankly I don't want to get rid of the first firearm I ever bought even though I know it's a piece of crap but it's my piece of crap as that was what I could afford back then. Help?

IIRC, there's a small spring in the trigger unit that controls the reset. You might want to check this. I've seen this similar issue with a lot of Sigmas.

Sitting in the vault? Could be some lube that has thickened to the point of stickiness.

I don't know about your pistol specifically, so a general tip: If it's all metal, hose down the interior with carb cleaner (I use Berryman's aerosol), allow to dry (or mostly dry - shouldn't take long), then flood it with lighter fluid. Work all moving parts, and hit it with lighter fluid again. (Note: Lighter fluid acts as a solvent, but leaves a touch of light oils as it flashes off.)

Thank you good sir. I'll replace that spring and see what happens. I'm almost positive it's a spring. Can't be the recoil spring, can't be the firing pin spring so I think you may be right....

By any chance you use WD40 to lube it before storing for long duration?
