    Double Star 1911

Can we get the Double Star 1911 in CA? If not what would be a comparable 1911 for the price(~$1000)? I was looking at a Springfield Loaded, but was turned off by the fact it is not USA made...

Here's a link to the Double Star I am refering to:

Unless the list goes away you will not be able to get the DS in CA. 1911s were designed without a magazine safety and that makes them ineligible for the approved list. In my opinion the Springer Loaded would come the closest and would be my choice for a $900-1000 purist 1911.

What about the Smith and Wesson 1911s? Has anyone shot or owned one of them? There are a few of them on the "safe" list, right? Do they have any issues with the external extractors?

I own one and in my opinion they make the best 1911s in the $800-1000 price range. In general the fit and finish is a bit better than the Springer and so is the trigger. Reliability and warranty service (for life) for both are the best in the industry. I did not include them in my previous post because you were looking at a purist 1911. The hardcore purists dislike the look of the external extractor.

        Mine is the high-end S&W PC1911.

Thanks for the info and pics! Does your model have the scandium(spl?) frame? I have shot my father in-laws .357 mag revolver with a scandium frame and it was unpleasant to say the least.

Mine is a high buck hand built (PC1911) target model and is all steel. The light weight versions are the SW1911PD line. PD = Personal Defense and have a scandium frame for carry. A non-PD SW1911 is what you're looking for, they are all steel and run $800-1000.

If you are really looking for "purist" then I would say the best choice is a Dan Wesson Pointman 7. It is a series 70 style (no odd internal safeties) it doesn't have internal locking systems, or a super ultra light titanium firing pin. It is also made out of mostly ed brown parts, and the fit and finish are excellent. I think MSRP on a brand new one is in the $1100ish range.

Oh, found the link - sticker price is $1191

              Dan Wesson PM7

I think if you want a new, rostered gun, in the "purist" genre, it is just about your only choice.

I actually got to hold a couple S&W 1911's yesterday (sorry not sure which exact models) and I must say I was pretty impressed by the fit and finish on these. You don't tend to hear about the S&W 1911's as much as other brands and I am not sure why, they seemed like a quality piece of equipment for the price.

S&W1911 and other autos is the only thing they have done right. their revolvers have locks. That was a big mistake.
