    1911 Guide rod question

So, I picked up a Springfield Armory 1911 Loaded in 9mm about 5 or 6 years ago and really didn't understand why Springfield decided on having a two-piece guide rod as my other 1911's don't have it or need an Allan wrench/hex key to take off. I've been looking to replace it for some time, but I've been shooting this a little more, so I decided now's the time to look at replacing it. Which is why I'm here. What would be a good replacement guide rod/spring. I mainly shoot 45's so 9mm is a just a slight change. Thanks again for any pointers in the right direction.

Try the Wilson Combat guide-rod (and spring plug) shown on this currently-running thread:
(former) Glock and 1911 Armorer; LEO (now retired)

The SA two piece sits flush with the spring plug. There are full length guide rods that are like 1/8" shorter that is one piece and can be removed without tools.

          Mine too.

Psst You can hear the egos deflating if you put your ear next to the screen.

As a recovering 1911 snob I am entirely indifferent to the length the the guide rod.

I replaced all three of my Springfield 2-piece guide rods with Wilson Combat Full-Length Guide Rods: https://shopwilsoncombat.com/GUIDE-R...oductinfo/25G/

I have the Loaded 9mm…great gun. First real mod I made was day one. Wilson 1 piece as others have mentioned.

Only other cause I have old eyes…Dawson FO front sight.

I have found that the Wilson mags are easier to load than the SA mags…might wanna look into that.

If you’re a cheapskate like me, Trim the front piece of that guide rod from that Springfield. Once it’s the correct length use red Loctite or JB Weld to make it semi permanent one piece guide rod.

Thanks for the the info and recommendations. I’ve been looking at getting it done, plus the front sight is going to be replaced also. But it’s a good gun for the money it just took awhile to get more range time with it since I shoot .45 a lot more even non 1911 handguns.

Nothing wrong with a caliber that starts wit a 4, and especially one that ends with a 5. If you have an added P like +p

Guide rods in 1911 is one of my favorite topics.

OP, no one here will be able to explain why Springfield chooses to use two piece full length guide rods on their 1911 instead of the one piece full length.

My remaining three 1911 have FLGR. I bought GI length guide rods from Wilson for replacement, but I haven't actually replaced them because I prefer the smoother functioning of my 1911 using the FLGR. I have the GI length for just in case.

Aesthetically, the longer two piece looks better because there isn't a hole in the front.

Or, you could just install a standard GI guide rod and be done with all the nonsense.

I also run the Wilson in my TRP. Works fine.
