How much ammo to get good?

Ben Stoeger on how much you really need to spend.

His answer: He made GM with under 5000 rounds. I've seen it and known it myself. And I've seen the opposite. Dudes that'll blow 2000 rounds a month in training classes and years later, they're not much better.

Not just the number of rounds it takes to become a master, but you'll run through a prodigious number of rounds to stay that way.

It is the dedication of an individual and their decision to make training a priority that makes the difference. It has been demonstrated by Stoeger and others that with regular structured dry and live fire training huge gains in results are possible. They do this with much more dry fire then live. They aren't casually plinking at the range.

Most of us would like to shoot better but very few prioritize it to a high degree. The same is true for maintaining your skills. Mostly dryfire and confirm with live fire. There are some who have used mostly live fire to get to the top but it's been shown that it's not the only way. Especially recently with ammo and component costs.

Also like most anything. Some people just naturally take to it and some never do. I think most anyone can get proficient but but to be really great not everyone has that in them.

I took a class with Ben, IMO it isn’t just structure to the training, there is a purpose to everything. Analyze and improve. As said though, there is natural ability. I’d never say “5k for a normal person”.

A lot plateau, or maybe I should say stall, at different spots and then need time and extra effort to go the next step. I’ll admit I never passed E or maybe it was F? Crap level. I put I knew what my issues were and was getting steady gains. I had some medical issues and stopped for a long time and for now am shooting trap w my daughter.. No shooting is more fun than action pistol.

A buddy of mine I think is a GM in some classes and A-M in others this I think took 5 years but to my knowledge he never did specialized practice, he shot 3-4 matches a month

Being serious and focused I think matters more than overall quantity. Like you said some guys shoot a lot and never get better.

Being a mid pack local USPSA shooter puts you above probably 98% of gun owners. Action shooting is a lot of fun and really shows you a lot.

That’s only one part of the equation, the other part is how much to stay good.

Sounds like they're not doing daily dry fire with a plan.

depends on how much preparation the shooter made prior to shooting by watching youtube videos

There's partial truth in this statement.

When I first learned how to shoot, my grip was all weird and I had a hard time managing recoil even on a G19. I watched some YT vids on grip, and listened to some RSOs and my recoil management improved vastly.

Went from blowing 500 rds/day not hitting crap, to now landing most shots on a range day with only 150 - 200 rds throughout the weekend. Some pick it up quicker than others. My wife took about 100 rds to find her grip and she analyzed her faults quickly. Definitely picked it up much quicker than I did.

I agree 100% here, I have a law enforcement background in my younger days had many different range instructors work with me and never was a great shot. I had shot lots of rounds with improvement but never got to great shooting levels.

I finally had an instructor pick up something that I was doing sub consciously worked the issue out with me and within 200-300 rounds I was going from border line being able to qualify to easily qualifying with no effort.

So all the rounds in the world won't have helped me improve much if something was out of alinement when I fired.

For those who think that for everyone it just takes lots of rounds fired to get better if the shooters form isn't correct probably never get much better.
