Beretta PX4 FTF Problem. Gun or ammo?

So I went to the range a couple days ago to shoot couple of my pistols. I have a PX4 that has about 400 rounds thru it, never cleaned or lubed. The gun started having failure to feed issues every 10 rounds or so. Out of 50 shots, had FTF 5 times. And every mag the slide wouldn't lock back (no its not my thumb). The FTF is bc the slide wasn't being cocked back far enough, so that the round wasn't being chambered correctly; which also explains why the slide wasn't locking back at all on last round.

For reference I was also shooting a Sig p365xl, about 100 rounds, which had absolutely no issues.

The ammo I was shooting was PMC bronze 9mm 115gr. It's also an ammo I bought over 6 years ago.

Is the problem with the gun? Or maybe bad batch of ammo? Is PMC known to be a bit underpowered? Or maybe a combination of that plus gun not being lubed? What do you think?

The only time I've had any issues with my PX4 it was ammo related. Tens of thousands of rounds through that gun (my EDC) and only one batch of ammo had issues.

Might be a combination of problems. Start with lubricating the cam and barrel channel. Had a similar issue with my 8045 (the PX4s grandpa)

My friend Spock suggests using a logical approach. First, clean your goddamn gun! Then shoot said gun again with the same ammo. If you still have failures to feed, use different ammo. If you use different ammo and you still have failures, it's because your gun is an a**hole and doesn't want you to be happy.

              WHY NOT?

              GREAT RANGE AMMO.

Is the problem with the gun?

              NO...PROBLEM WITH ITS OWNER.

Or maybe bad batch of ammo?

              I DOUBT IT.

Is PMC known to be a bit underpowered?

              NO.

Or maybe a combination of that plus gun not being lubed?

              NO.....YES.

              What do you think?
I have 1000's of rounds (Federal HST or American Engle FMJ) thru my PX4 Strom 9mm. 100% stock except for XS sights and grip tape. Factory mags.

Zero issues of any kind. Nada.....The only time it failed to shoot, was when it was unloaded! Same outstanding reliability as its older siblings (92F, 92FS, Compact, INOX. etc....)

OP...did you clean the heavy factory lube from the gun, then apply a thin coat of oil on the fiction / contact spots on the frame. slide, etc., before your 1st range trip?

Also take the time to clean the gun after every range trip. Most Berettas like to run wet. No need to soak a ton of oil on the shiny spots. Just cover the contact surfaces with a thin coat of high grade oil.

Do that, then go to the range and have fun.

Thanks all for the input. I didn't think handguns needed to be cleaned or lubed that often (below 500 rounds). That said, I gave it a good cleaning and lubing and will try to shoot the same ammo on my next trip.

                  1. Try different ammo. If different ammo works, problem solved.
                  2. Clean and lube, then shoot again. If it works on same ammo, problem solved.

that's a good start in eliminating what's causing the problem.

As has already been pointed out, even when new - give the pistol a once-over and ensure it's lubed and clean.
THEN take it to the range.
For slides and the frame's slide rails, I still recommend using a synth grease instead of oil. Use light oil (your choice) in the places stated by your owner's manual.

I do not want a gun that has to be cleaned that often

Have a p365xl on 4k rounds no cleaning a g19 on 11k jsh no cleaning
