Article: Why Trigger Jerk Is A Myth

Great Article from Dec 2021, by John "Shrek" McPhee...

For, well, ever, shooters have been taught to avoid “trigger jerk” when shooting, particularly handguns. There’s practically a whole industry around diagnosing and correcting this horrible imperfection in one’s shooting. But, it’s all based on a myth.

It's squeeze and pull, there is no jerk. Save for the guy who accidentally muzzle sweeps you at the range.

They ask for the ShootNSee pie chart stickers specifically, so yes. apparently some do.

The author misses a large portion of what the "don't jerk" advice addresses:

Jerking the trigger does several things: It telegraphs the fact that the shot is coming, which increases the tendency to anticipate.

It causes a tensing of not just the trigger finger, but largely the entire muscle group of the hand and forearm, in a very short span of time, which means any sight movement will likely be missed by the eye.

Since the human brain can generally only concentrate on one thing, it draws the attention off the sights and onto the trigger release. Thus sight alignment gets relegated further down the list, causing errant shots.

[not really a result of jerking, but more of a partner]: It promotes trying to hit the trigger at the "correct moment" when the sights and target are lined up perfectly, which increases the likelihood of doing both the previous things.

What I've found works best for most situations is to get the sights aligned, start a constant buildup of pressure on the trigger (pressure curve should be a smooth ramp from zero through the release point), and put your concentration back into keeping the front and rear sights aligned as best you can.

Edit: I should add that the author is sort of correct. If you can hold a pistol on target and perfectly still, your trigger technique doesn't matter. Squeeze, jerk, hit it with a hammer, it'll put the shot where you want. It's when you throw in the human element (holding the gun on target with your wobbly-*** muscles) that problems arise.

There is a lot of click-bait cringe in the article. I found it hard to read.

There are some good ideas there, like filming yourself (doing anything you want to be better at), but getting through the complaints about the pie chart would have made me stop reading had I just randomly come across the article. On that, you can say you don't know where something comes from, or you can say it is junk science, not both.

Here's what happens when you trigger jerk.

I agree with much of the author that the trigger finger is not the cause, but sadly in reading the whole thing, and checking Ctrl-F not one instance of the word "wrist" was used.

So yes, the author knows what trigger jerk isn't, but he doesn't present a solution.

                              It's in the wrist.

Those pie charts were originally designed for single hand bulls eye type shooting.

The grip strength needs to be the same on both sides of the gun.

Wherever the front sight falls back to is usually where the bullet went.
Before there was Polymer there was Accuracy.
