.40sw vs a bear? It is a draw. Nobody wins. Both die.

If they had just locked the f*ing front door; it might have never been an issue at all.

I wouldnt use my glock 22 for a bear. I carry my .44mag taurus raging bull while out hunting.

Yup, the obvious is always lost in the rush to compare which caliber is best. Right up there with what is better for 1000 yard SD or the Friday night neighborhood firefight?

More important though, did the guy put on his plate carrier, bat belt, helmet, 10,000 lumen light and 10 watt laser first?

Heck, a little Cree woman once used a .22 (but from a rifle) to brain a similar-sized bear DRT.

She hit him in the temple, between the ear and the eye.

Well, I can think of worse choices to have at hand! Glad it worked out - I’d be upgrading a tad bit if I were in their shoes

I have seen black bears killed by 9mm and .45 acp. They’re not magical animals, they die like anything else. All things considered I wouldn’t purposefully go look to harvest a black bear with a .40 but I’m confident it’ll get the job done.

I live in bear country and when I am camping in their hood I don’t even swap out guns, I just swap out ammo for something with less expansion and more penetration.

I think that would simply irritate the bear. Get a shotgun with slugs.

A fishing guide, hunting guide and outdoor writer Phil Shoemaker was taking a client fishing along a stream in Alaska and was charged by a Grizzly.... he killed it with a well placed Buffalo Bore Hardcast 9mm. There is an article about it.....

So I wouldn’t want to mess with a grizzly. I live in black bear territory and coincidentally read an article on why .45 acp hornady critical duty wasn’t the best ammo for self defense. The author cited that they only expand to .65” and have greater penetration. By odd coincidence these rounds were for sale at an LGS at $32 for 50. They’re pretty hot rounds, 1000 fps in a 220 grain from the factory. I bought a couple boxes and keep one mag full for use when I’m in bear areas, mostly in the Kings Range.
