Assuming you only want on-roster suggestions.

The CZ-75 and P-01 slim down quite a bit with thin grips. There is also a modification from Cajun Gun Works that brings the trigger back a little to make double-action shots a bit easier.

The XD has a nice grip if you have smaller hands. Trigger is ok out of the box, but benefits from an after-market kit.
My friends and family disavow all knowledge of my existence, let alone my opinions.

Take a look at the sig 210 tactical sport if you can find one. Those are wonderful guns that shoot lights out for almost everyone I've ever seen shoot them.

I'm eyeing the CW9 or CT9. On paper, they seem like an obvious choice. My experience with Kahr just hasn't been the experience I want a new shooter to have. Maybe the larger frames in a 9 alleviates my concerns?

I wish revolvers did it for him. Sadly, they do not.

The more and more I shoot the more I realize how a gun feels matters less and and less. I wouldn't say it's irrelevant, but in my opinion proper grip and following the basics trumps how a gun feels.

I'd love to talk him into a HK P7, but cost and cost prohibit it at a contender.
P6 does not take jhp well. Also mags are overly expensive and the new m11 mags do not fit

The CZ 75 Compact is very versatile. Home defense, range/target, carry. Add G10 grips of choice.
