After a quarter century a grail gun (or two) comes home.

I feel in love with SW Mountain Guns when I first handled one in the early 1990's and have been on a look out ever since for one in 45 Colt. Life got in the way at times (getting married/buying a house/kids...) but they were never far from my mind.

Over time I found a few for sale but never close enough to inspect and droes...until a few weeks ago.

Only issue is they were a pair - one 45 Colt and one 41 Remington Mag - and the seller did not want to break up the set. Took a deep breath and said I will take them.

They came home today and here they are:

Both Pre lock and paired with the orginal boxes and paperwork, my two almost new SW Mountain Guns.

I do. I have other 45 Colt guns including a SDS 625-5 Classic so I am pretty much set on that.

41 Rem Magnum is new but I have a few loads I will be trying with 215 gr lead and TrailBoss.

These will be a shot quite a bit, but on a diet of mild loads. No reason to beat them up.

Great catch. Find yourself the .44mag version and have a set of triplets.

                    I think you’ll really like the .41.
                    Great round

                      "What does mountain gun mean?"

Well I remember reading in a paper gun magazine that they were lighter weight than the regular Smith & Wesson model 29 but I never knew if it was just the obvious barrel profile / slimmed down / tapered style or if they had other areas where they were lightened up to reduce weight.
And more importantly how much was that weight reduction difference?
Wikipedia doesn't exactly answer those questions though...

"The Mountain Gun was introduced in 1989 as a lightweight version of the Model 29 designed to be "carried often and shot little". The barrel profile is a reprise of the original design. Early version 29-4 backpacker with 2.5" barrel (very rare).
A Smith & Wesson Model 629 with a 3" barrel called the "Trail Boss" was produced for the distributor, RSR"

Saw those and thought long and hard about them. Great pickup, congratulations!

Honestly I think the .41 Magnum is criminally underrated, no thanks to Remington opting to not make a Special version of it, advertising the full power hunting loads well before touching on an LE/self defense load, and making the milder LE loads a lot more powerful than they needed to be.

Great looking Smith's. They are keepers.
