dry fire practice.

If you want a system that is actually fun to use and records all your data I highly recommend the Mantis Laser Academy kit. It's worth the money and you can see your progress and practice as well. My wife even will ask "can we do some dry fire drills" that never happened before.
The standard kit is the one we have but they have others.

if you are speaking of a revolver, then practice DA.
With a SA/DA pistol, both.
Draw from holster, hammer down- pull taking up slack on way to target -perfect sight picture and alignment- and break the shot.
Keep firing grip and trigger trapped
run slide 1" or what is needed to reset the action.
get firing grip back with support hand
reset the trigger
back to sight alignment, sight picture, focus on front sight, press.

With DA/SA you fire first shot from holster DA, then continue with the dead trigger - you don't let it go enough to reset (for those with double-strike capability) and you certainly don't mess with the slide.
With the SA or DAO trigger with *no* double-strike capability, you fire the first shot and then work the (dead) trigger. With a revolver, you shoot the way you would normally, which is (should be) DA only.
Don't touch the slide - it's not something you'd do in live fire. Don't run the trigger back into DA mode if you have DA/SA trigger with double-strike capability.sigpicNRA Benefactor MemberComment

This is *ONLY* if you're practicing strict accuracy, and if you do, don't draw from the holster. Drawing from holster implies action/defensive/combat shooting and you need to practice it the way you would actually use it.Draw from holster, hammer down- pull taking up slack on way to target -perfect sight picture and alignment- and break the shot.

If you're doing strict accuracy fundamentals, don't even bother with the DA until you are ready to transition to the action shooting. You will need that DA pull for the first shot and you will find out that the main difficulty with the DA/SA guns is precisely the transition from the first DA to the rest SA shots. But leave that for the time when you actually start practicing how to *use* the gun, vs. just learning how to control the trigger.sigpicNRA Benefactor MemberComment

Revolver, I would dry-fire double-action. Matter of fact, that's what I do. This is because, for me, dry-firing is an exercise as well. The Ruger Super Redhawk has a fairly long DA trigger pull, so I practice with each hand for 100 dry-fires. Ruger actually encourages people to do this.
When I go to the range, my trigger fingers, both left and right, are strong enough as a result to where I do a better job nailing the #10 ring. This is true when firing in either single-action or double-action mode.
For the semi-autos, I use a magazine full of snap caps and go through the entire magazine. This is good for tap/rack/bang drills. Racking the slide if I don't hear and feel the bang is now second-nature.
OP, are you using a revolver or a semi-auto pistol for your dry-fire practice?"San Francisco Liberal With A Gun"
