    snap caps

I have lost most of my snap caps over the years.

I try to add some to a bag of ammo for malfunction practice at the range.

Any cheap place to buy them?

Yes- made with a fired case and a plastic insert.

    thanks

I load dummy rounds for all of my handgun calibers and use a short slice of rubber O-ring for the fake primer. I have hundreds of O-rings in my misc hardware drawers and can easily find one of the right diameter for the primer pocket. A tiny bit of super glue holds it in place.

Make up your own. Clean, size and load W/O powder or primer of course.

Get some silicone RTV or similar, the stuff that dires up pretty hard and plug up the primer cavity.

Way better than anything you can buy. Plus (and this is the HUGE benefit) you can make up your snapcaps with Hollow points, fru-fru projectiles, flat nose, round nose, lead, coated, semi and fill jacketed and anything you want.

Typical snap caps come only in the usual FMJ.Round nose style or maybe the flat point for 40 but the round nose style work really well, what good is that if you use HP or something else?

After you've loaded up (again, sans powder and primer) drill the case crosswise once or twice so you know they are snap caps.

The other benefit and this is also important:

Say you always shoot a certain heavier projectile but don't have any to spare for snap caps. Use a lighter bullet with a similar shape and put something into the case to add weight. You can also make up your caps with defects. Don't size some and turn them into snap caps. That will help with malfunctions. Grind off some of the rim on one side and chamber it with that side to the extractor. It won't extract but you'll still be able to get the case out manually. Grind the case so that the ejector can't work on the case and then you'll have extraction but no ejection if your gun has both functions separate.

Load some with no crimp or neck size and that lets the bullet set back, another malfunction you can train for. Load some with the bullet way too far out and it won't chamber. All these things regular snap caps can't do but you can make your own and have it.

I'm only saying that you (or have someone you know make them up) can make your own snap caps that mimic what you shoot instead of some plastic or anodized aluminum caps that cost way more than the benefit they provide. If you want a different color case, no sweat, get some Birchwood Casey brass color and turn them brown or plum whatever or use some of that silver plating rub on stuff and make them silver look. Takes minutes and you'll never again run out of snap caps.

Let Go of the Status Quo!

Don't worry, it will never pass...How in the hell did that pass?

Think past your gun, it's the last resort, the first is your brain.

Defense is a losing proposition when time is on the side of the opponent. In the history of humanity, no defense has ever won against an enemy with time on their side.

I make my own, as well. My goal was to have them look identical to my live rounds so I didn't know which was the dummy. I just loaded without powder or primer and then I don't look at the case head when I load them in the magazine. They get a little dirty after a few cycles through the chamber and the bullet sets back eventually, but if you want it to be a surprise, it's hard to beat.
