    CA and taurus?

I was looking at buying a .22lr revolver as a backup or CCW the other day. I was looking at the S&W 317 but I suspect that is a piece of junk or won't be durable as much as they milled out of the frame on that gun, so I decided to go with the Taurus 94ss2 ( http://www.taurususa.com/images/imagesMain/94SS2.jpg ) however when I checked the CA approved handguns list not only is it not on it, but neither is any other 22lr handgun and taurus makes many. Am I missing something or are none of Taurus's 22's legal in CA

Not missing anything, of they are not on the list, then they are not "safe" for sale.
I think it can be confirmed that an alien xenomorph is absolutely no match for good ole' Alabama black snake!

I don't see any Taurus 22 revolvers on the list - so no, they're not OK for dealer stock sale in CA. If you have your heart set on one, maybe an LE can get one in for you, or an out of state "Mom/Dad transfer" or get lucky & find a used one in state.

I'm not a big fan of the new Smiths, but I really wouldn't worry about a 22 lr stressing a J frame too much. J frames have been used for years in 38 Special and are now used for 357 Magnum. Shooting many thousands of rimfire should be no problem.

I guess I'm confused Taurus revolvers have a key lock and they are mere rim-fire guns what's not CA legal about them or so hard to make legal?... that blows

Being CA legal has nothing to do with an internal lock - CA does not require a revolver to have an internal lock to be sold in state. CA requires $$$ and that the gun be submitted for drop testing & such. Rimfires as well as centerfires.

a .22 for backup or CCW?
I though .22s were most for target shooting...you may want to conside a bigger caliber for backup or CCW.

If you even think about giving me the carry something that starts with a 4 and ends with 5 speech I will lite a fire under your backside lol. The fact of the matter is I am a mere college student I don't have loads of money to spend on 40s&w ammo and go shooting every weekend but I do have money to buy Winchester Super X 22lr and do that. I want to train like crazy and do allot of shooting. I train for head shots reason being if you come across someone with body armor which is seen more and more these crazy days your going to have to shoot them in the head anyway to put them down. The venerable 22lr does this incredibly well in that once it enters the skull it doesn't just exit out the back causing minimal damage like a larger caliber but bounces back and forth several times inside the skull affecting massive internal damage. I am willing to train at a level that other people are not to ensure my skill, accuracy, and confidence with the small chamber offering. That is what separates me from someone who buys a 45 and shoots it once every six months and complains a 22 could never get the job done because they can't hit bulls butt with a handful of rice. Granted everyone is different about what caliber and gun type works for them take 1911 and Glock people they bash the hell out of one another but their guns individually work for them. 90% of the time it's about what you need and what works best for you and not what some product or brand myopic guy tries to pressure you into. Thank you guys for your opinions and advice I appreciate your time I will take another look at the 317 it seems it doesn't have the durability issues I thought it would.

no dude.. I don't care for 45s...I only have 9mms and 357s spreaded around the house. Would never carry any of my 357s.
45 is overkill, an American myth ..but .22 may not have the stopping power needed in extreme situations.

A buddy of mine at work called Tarus and asked why the PT1911 wasn't on the CA market yet. They told him they were not submitting any more handguns for testing and would be pulling completly out of the California market within X (I forgot the number) of years.

Your reasoning is valid. Don't listen to the BS about caliber selection, you got it right!

The 317 however, is not an accurate gun. I wanted one for a long time and have asked many owners how they liked theirs and all gave me the same feedback, that they aren't accurate enough. If you want to train for a head shot you might be dissapointed with the 317.

What other 22's have you looked at?

My friend has the Walther TPH and it's been reliable, accurate and fun to shoot.

Just something to think about...if the 22lr head shots were that easy wouldn't special forces like SWAT be using this caliber and tactic? I also don't understand your logic with a larger caliber bullet not doing the job when entering the head...a small intrance wound and larger exit wound in the head would be most likely fatal. I do respect your wanting to train a lot, but I am not sure the 22lr head shots is the best way to stop an armored foe. I guess a 22lr would be better than nothing. As far as the 1911 and Glock guys arguing back and forth whom has a better weapon...I don't get that either...I have both and see each has value as a defense weapon. I would suggest a .38 cal revolver that also shoots 357 magnum. 38's are not that expensive to shoot and train with...also you have the flexibility to shot 357 magnum which is an excellent one shot stopping round.

Anyway good luck with your training and shooting.
