Jan 11 (Reuters) - Personalized smart guns, which can be fired only by verified users, may finally become available to U.S. consumers after two decades of questions about reliability and concerns they will usher in a new wave of government regulation.

Smartguns will become a reality and it really doesn't matter what current gun owners think or want. The march to smartguns is a generational shift just many things; indoctrinate the young and easily influenced and at some point they represent a significant enough percentage of the population that what was once seen as radical change becomes easily accomplished.

It doesn't matter if you will buy one it only matters if some people will buy one. There is more money in making smartguns than all of the current sales potential of current models put together.

Just a few decades ago few the idea of putting smart sights or what we call optics on handguns for HD/SD was crazy. Too much bulk, its not the way a real gun should work...

No look, an entire industry exists just to cater to people buying optics for handguns, having slides milled to make them work, factory options to buy over the counter, you name it. So it will happen with smartguns, just give it time.

Industries never rely on what you would buy they rely on what other people will buy. While I don't advocate the move to smart technology on guns anyone taking note on the technological developments of the past few decades who thinks this won't happen is just a die hard bumper sticker type.

It won't take a lot of government intervention to get smartguns into the hands of people, there are untold millions of people in the US that do not own guns or many that do own guns but only out of fear of not having one and given better conditions in society wouldn't own one in the first place. Those are the people who will buy smartgun technology especially as a factory option.

The gun owning community often screams at the sky about gun control and things like the roster. Sorry to say and while it's just opinion, I would say that a significant percentage of people right here on Calguns would embrace smartguns if it meant no roster and they could walk into a gun store and walk out with a new gun purchase or even just go from 10 days to 3.

Now add onto that if states like CA adopted a right to carry if all guns had smartgun tech and some of the biggest voices would jump on-board.

Almost everyone here already trusts their lives to some kind of smart tech from smoke detectors to the car you drive everyday. As I said, I don't relish the day when some smartgun tech becomes the accepted way of things but all the arguments about trusting your life to smart-tech rings hollow when almost all of the people arguing against it for guns have no problem with entrusting their lives to the same concept for everything else.

One of the strongest arguments that always comes up goes along the lines of "when you need to defend your life and the smartgun doesn't fire..." or like that. Yeah, and when you step on your brakes going 25 mph before getting to the cross walk crowded with school children and they stop working there is some huge difference in how many people can be killed? Its a losing argument and the only reason it isn't torn to shreds isn't because the argument is so iron clad, its because the technology thus far hasn't evolved far enough to be of the same reliability as the electronic control systems in some cars.

Everything about guns that makes owning and using them such a satisfying experience, from the mechanicals to the processes like reloading, practice and so on are precious, not to mention the 2nd/A side of things. None of that matters because tech is moving on regardless of whether or not you or I agree with it. Its a fact.

SharedShots is probably right, but if I have to compromise, I'd like 50 state deregulation of suppressors and SBR/SBS and nationwide carry.

Remington did those electronic primers ages ago. I don't know if the gadgetry is small enough for a pistol now, but it could probably be made so.

If they get a few large LE orgs to sign up and carry it, it could be a reality.
