Finally got a chance to handle the new Python

Was at Turners Florin and they had three in various lengths in the $1850 ball park.

According to the manager, they were CZ manufacture, and boy were they nice. But $18XX plus tax, nice? I'm not so sure... Of course the novelty of owning another readily available colt has me intrigued, I know the diminishing returns blows compared to the competition. It reminds me of the days SAAs were still in the case.

Part of me thinks finding an early deep-blued 25 or 29 in the classifieds would be better, even a TRR8 Hillary hole be damned keeping it .357 themed, but damn if I still want one.

IMO Colt made Pythons - Not CZ also real Pythons don't have plywood grips and do I even need to go to the leaf vs coil spring debate.
There is a reason old ones are $2500+ and new ones $1500.

OK this thread just inspired me to burn a Sportsman's Coupon and get a 4" Python.

$1499 before coupon, $1349.99 after coupon.

I can appreciate the allure of the older Pythons but at this price I am in for a newer one that I can shoot. The older Pythons need hand fitted replacement parts and the newer ones can use drop in parts because they are made using CNC. They still have a very tight cylinder gap and a choked bore, and the triggers are rated as good as the old ones by people who have both - at least now that the issues with the loose side-plate screws have been worked out.

Anyhow if Turners is asking $1850 before tax, that is sort of a rip. But if that is the case, I can probably shoot this one a good deal and still sell it for more than I paid later unless Cz really chops the price.

I almost pulled the trigger a few times before xmas but hearing that Turners is getting $1850 pushed me over the edge to snag a deal on one. But I would not pay more than $1300 for it. It is not better than a GP100 IMO, so any extra you are giving is for the name.

Same here... Had a few instances that I could have gotten it at Sportsman or the local shop. But was trying to justify the purchase - I mean, there are better or at par at the least revolvers out there that cost less. As you said - the premium is for the name.

OP - I shot a buddy's new 6" Colt Python and thought, why I don't I have one of these? So I went down to sportsman's and bought one. It's pretty awesome and looks damn good.

If you can find one at MSRP, it's a no brainer. You won't regret it. Heck, even if you go SW 586/686 with the stupid hole. You won't regret that either. No need to talk yourself out of one. This is Calguns... we buy and don't need a reason why.

The new Python uses a leaf mainspring of the same type as the older Python. The new model grips don't appeal to me at all either. I replaced them with Deer Hollow repros at a cost (ouch) of about $225.00.

My only surviving original model Python is an 8" nickel "Target Model" in 38 Special. It's worth so much not because it's so well made, but rather that I and only about 250 other folks were foolish enough to buy a Python in 38 Special back around 1980.

I like older Pythons better than the new models. The bluing, the action, the tear drop hammer spur that does so much to make the action seem easier to cock. But the new model Python is very well made and a pretty good deal at list price.

Turners recently had them advertised at $1,549.

There are at least two other stores in the LA area with them currently in stock that also have them from $1,549 to $1,589 in recent days (Rettings and Ammo Bros.) Riflegear doesn't have them in now, but when they had them, their price was $1,499 and that is the current price showing on their website (even if out-of-stock).

And that's still overpriced considering MSRP was originally supposed to be $1,249.00.
