    Sten Mk II pistol configuration

I have a Sten Mk II semi auto.
If I remove the stock and put on the pistol grip can I then put on a 6" barrel and remain legal?

No, It would have to be on the roster in that configuration to be legal, it’s not.

Or, would need to have come into the state in that configuration and registered as such

Is it a rifle now? If so, it would become a federal short barrelled rifle with a short barrel.

Are we talking about a Sten Gun similar to the submachine gun in World War II?

Did it start in a pistol configuration when first manufactured? Which state are you in? (The mobile website does not show the location or avatar of a post)

You can not build a semi auto pistol in California because it is not on the roster.

If you reconstructed it as a rifle first, AFT says it will have to stay a rifle.

I presume you're discussing a gun that is currently rifle/long gun. The 'demilled' status may add some
handwaving, but a prosecutor could argue it 'was' a long gun in its prior history.

You simply cannot convert a rifle to a pistol in California (and even with Feds it can take handwaving/remfg
etc.) Additionally in CA a handgun that becomes a long gun cannot be returned to handgun status.

Violating this results in CA SBR charge risk, a felony.

This is wholly separate from any additional drama about Roster or assault weapon status.

Isn't Sten rifle (16" barrel semi) featureless?

Regardless, as other said, if it is originally built as a rifle, replacing with a barrel < 16" would turn it into a SBR in all 50 States, thus you would need a Fed stamp.

Even tho going with SBR may work around the Handgun roster, it is still considered a pistol AW, mag outside the hand grip.

It is also not a C&R, as the receiver is new.

Yes. A Sten MK II with a 16" barrel is a featureless rifle.

Outside CA and without a stock, being sold as a handgun, would seem to me OK. PPsh43 kits were turned into handguns and are being sold, Sten setup would be of the same?

Perhaps (don't have a pic of grip configuration at hand) - but I'm pretty sure a 16" Sten is only gonna be 26" OAL.

... and semiauto centerfire rifles that are under 30" are also AWs.

You'd need some kinda barrel and or stock extension.
