    S&W 986 Pro. 9mm.....good?

    Hi,

I might have the possibility to purchase a S&W 986 Pro. 9mm.... basically it's NIB old stock.....are these good revolvers?

if so, what's a fair price for one nowadays?

    thank you

Short answer, no. It's only a 7 shot, to compete in ICORE you need an 8 shot.

9mm revolvers generally don't work that great. It's a rimless tapered case. Not really what revolvers like.

I can't imagine why anybody would want a 9 mm revolver. With so many excellent 9 mm autoloaders on the market. It does not make sense to me.

Totally understand, it is like getting bitten by the gambling bug, but it is a heavy, low-capacity 9mm. If I am paying that weight and capacity penalty, I prefer rimmed magnum revolver calibers. Just my $0.02.

If you're going to get a revolver, maybe get one of those ones that can stop a bear. Like those Ruger Redhawk ones. That I can understand.

Some people like the old-world feel of revolvers. Look at the 1911. Obsolete as hell, but they still sell a ton.

The 986 is an interesting and attractive gun. Unfortunately, it fills no specific niche other than "just because."

It balances better than the 929, and it's not that heavy. It's an L frame, not N frame. Just don't expect too much regarding the factory trigger. Usually just ok.
              It's an easy comfortable shooter.
There are some people that it's just not worth engaging.

OP, I've got a five inch 929 9mm. Also a five inch 627 .38/.357. If you're in Orange County you're welcome to shoot them.

I shoot the 627 99% of the time.

I'll make a similar offer. I have a 929 (stock), couple of different 627's and 986. I'm in greater San Diego area. I'll be unavailable to go shooting after the 30th for a few weeks due to surgery.

If the idea is to keep from having to add another caliber to your collection, the 986 is a great revolver for 9mm.
It's accurate, reliable, and remarkably easy to shoot.
I bought one for me, but my wife claimed it after whacking multiple bullseyes at 25 yards with cheap factory ammunition.

Yeah, if you're just plinking they're fine. If you're shooting competition like USPSA or ICORE, it's not the right tool for the job.
