How about a pair of authentic appearing smooth bores that launch paint balls with a bang? Maybe a pinch of black powder? Probably would have to be compressed air to be legal? Might be fun!!

It was considered bad manners to actively shoot to kill, not that it didn't happen. The braver of the two would sometimes shoot wide or into the ground to demostrate contempt for the other party, that they weren't even worth the effort to seriously aim. There were some killers who dueled however, and ran up a body count.

A modern dueling pistol would be a smoothbore single shot with no sights shooting a .22 short SV.

If one of the duelers is a much better shot than the other, is a duel fair? The pistols should be inaccurate and unreliable like the old muzzleloading pistols to make it more random and level the playing field. Same as they used to be!

Or more properly to Andrew Jackson who killed 36+ men in duels and the Congress outlawed Dueling in 1836 because of him! He'd kill anyone that pissed him off, and I guess that wasn't too hard to do?
