I am indifferent. "loaded when up" marking bothers me more than the indicator itself.

So if you rely on these crutches instead of Rule #1, you could learn the hard (and tragic) way someday.

Nothing replaces rule #1. All guns are always loaded (until confirmed otherwise)

The California ones are silly. I have a couple old style ones that aren't obtrusive and are part of the original design. They don't bother me and I never pay any attention or rely on them.

I HATE the one on my Cali Sig P238. Witness holes work best for me. Depending on the model, it is hard to tell if some extractor types are sticking out a little bit or not.

I leave them in, but prematurely wear them out with a file.

What Skyhawk said…that, and the rules. The gun is always loaded thingy.

I feel they are dangerous because, they breed complacency by allowing people to believe a firearm is loaded or unloaded without actually visually and physically checking the chamber.

They're useful, generally better than a press check, sometimes ugly, and definitely should not be required by any law.

my 1939 Luger has one and that was my first smokeless firearm back in 1978, so they make no difference to me. I am used to them.
