    S&W Model 29 Stock

Looking to get some older stocks for Model 29-10 classic. Not as nice as the older Model 29-2, but reluctant to pay the premium.

The 29-10 has the new thinner stock and I would like the older wider stocks. Plus it will "complete the look" better with old stocks.

Saw these on Ebay....Are they genuine Smith and Wesson stocks?

They're real. Often referred to as having the "football" cutout on the left stock. I'm not familiat with the 29-10 version but if it is MIM with lock I'd presume it has a round butt. The stocks above are for a square butt Smith.

If so, you can put a spacer or filler into the slot and maintain the square stock fit. I've done a few with putty, although on stainless guns. Matches up well.

"Square butt to round butt" stocks are available also, but not in the 70's target Goncalo Alves style.

Based on above the stocks should fit just fine.

The stocks on the 29-10 pictured above are alot thinner than I'd imagine. 70's target types are markedly thicker all around.

The stocks / grips on current 29-10 production are quite thin all around. Some have said that it’s not as comfortable when shooting full 44 magnum loads. That’s another reason why I wanted to switch to older style stocks. Hopefully the eBay ones pictured in the first post will be thicker. Also the older and thicker stocks goes better with this large frame pistol in my opinion both in comfort and looks. Too bad the eBay stocks are not the “coke bottle” stocks, but I believe those are much more expensive.

Just wanted to make sure the eBay stocks are genuine S&W. Anyone know what year or production (29-x) the eBay stocks belong to?

Also the stocks don’t come with the screw. Where can I get a replacement? Or will the new 29-10 stock screw work with these?

            Don't forget there is also 29-5 changes/model.

Back to topic - If you are buying stocks via Ebay, make sure you ask the seller all the right questions. Often ebay sellers are not SW enthusiasts. If you ask all the right questions and get vague answers, I personally would stay away. They probably don't know either if it fits different dash models.

Before looking at Ebay, ask the SW forum, some might have done what you're doing.

That is part of the sale condition...seller lost the screw. Stock only and no hardware. I was hoping to use the screw that came with the new 29-10.

If the screw with the 29-10 is long enough I think it works. If not, Numrich Arms or NC Ordnance has them.

You may want to consider these:

Altamont makes their version of Coke grips and they're pretty good. Definitely beefier than the current factory version.

Every time I check out Smith stocks I'm reminded of all the pairs I tossed into the LGS "junk box" since about 1974 or so. And thinking "they can't get more expensive" but they always do. Wasn't so long ago that (for me) $75.00 was "too much".
