I have the 340PD and agree with Title1guy's comments. I'd go with the LCRx w/3" barrel for the application you described, with Buffalo Bore or some other deep penetration round.
If I was in brown bear country though -- where I've spent some time -- I'd want something a little more effective than .38SPCL out of a short barrel.
